I think he's a toaster that was cursed by the demon crown, or someone tried making a red flower pop tart and the toaster transformed into barlog. He was named by misery who found him and named him, so that he she didn't have to shout "Toaster minion" to summon him, because that is quite a mouthful.

okay I'm using this quote to explain my theory on balrog.

balrog is one of the many old inhabitants of the island that died during the war with the mimigas and the robots. As for how balrog survived maybe he hid around in a nice hiding spot like the starting cave or something. the demon crown turned him into a robot...also with the other crap that makes him look like a toaster and thats why he has no wings and such. later blah blah blah...quote and curly kill ballos...blah blah blah and suddenly wings on him as the curse is broken and he is back to his old self...and you dont really see the handle on his head or the his back so those wierd pockets(whatever those were) are not seen so those could be gone as well.

Balrog could not possibly fly with those little tiny wings, so he must have some other method of flight. Maybe it's magic, maybe it's just because he's a cartoon, but he also shoots missiles out of his body. Only robots can do that. Besides, creatures shouldn't be box-shaped. It's just a bad idea.
