Well, maybe the other hole is too small for the rocket to fit through. Or it's much higher up than the Last Cave, and Momorin and Itoh were unable to create a rocket that can go that high.

A hole that small wouldn't let through enough light for growing plants. And I don't think that "a man of considerable talent" wouldn't be able to build a rocket strong enough to get, well, to any given height. Of course, with only a battery as an electrical source... Anyway, if this was the case, a set of smaller holes would be much more reasonable.

 

Maybe one whole side of the island is missing, but we don't see it because it's the side the camera is facing away from.

 

Or, your computer's backlight lights the caves

Bioluminescent organisms are the reason why in Metroid. In fact some of the rooms in Super Metroid were based on some of the larger species of bioluminescent organisms. Accidentally killing them in a room full of spikes is a bad idea. And would you believe that they gave off the full spectrum of light. The cave in that anime movie "Laputa" gave off the full spectrum of light too from what I recall. Oh and fireflies in animation, full spectrum. See what I mean about fiction and bioluminescent organisms.

2. The rocket is not all that wide. Also you recall that the hole at the top of the gauntlet had size issues. Didn't stop Quote.
3. Any light coming through a hole too small for Quote to fit through and that high wouldn't be enough to light a room.

Yes, he would certainly be able to build a powerful enough rocket... if he has sufficient materials! And the right materials, for that matter.

I always thought of it more as a BanCannon, but Hammer works good too.

And back on topic: We can assume that the dark room in Sand Zone may simply be painted black, because you can still see the Save Spot, the Sand, The Croc and the Puppy.

 

I think it's a special magical force that illuminates the caves, just like the island is flying by a magical force.
