• Hey everyone happy Christmas Eve we're aware of what's happened with the source code so to keep this simple absolutely don't post it on the site or use it to make mods with (it's not particularly preferable toward this end anyway) and tread lightly in general until we see how this settles, thanks to all and have a great holiday season -DT

  • Man, I know Carrotlord kinda turned into a jerk, but I can't help but be grateful for that easy to understand assembly tutorial.

I do wonder what happened to Carrotlord. Hope he comes back sometime...

Why does everyone blame Dunc? Sure, he alienated a few new members, but he was just trying to be nice. D:

I sure hope the fact that I typed it in CAPS LOCK made it somewhat obvious I was being sarcastic. Dunc always has good intentions, whether or not he is being a dick in the process.

...I somehow both knew and didn't know that that was sarcasm. D:
I'm at the beach! It's my third day being here though, I guess I just didn't get around to updating it until now. Not going to be super active here for the rest of the week.

Sad that it's the last day, and it's night time. My mom's side of the family has been doing this for the past twenty years, so going to the beach every year has pretty much become a regular part of my life. Unfortunately, this is our last time doing this due to my grand dad's declining health.

As always, I had lots of fun swimming in the pool and jumping waves and building sand castles and hanging out with cousins. I'll probably post my sand constructions in the artwork thread. That probably qualifies as art...

That was your last time? How sad. =\

I hope ypu cherish it, anyway.
    Honest trailers: Cave Story
    HaydenStudios
    HaydenStudios
From Studio Pixel comes Cave Story, the acclaimed 2D platformer developed a little bit each night after work over the period of five years, a game that starts you out with absolutely no clue of what on earth you're supposed to do, doesn't tell you what you are until one fourth of the way through, and only even tells you your name just before the finale if you did a bunch of special secret things.

Defend a village inhabbited by six anthropomorphic rabbits led by a cranky sleep-deprived one, constantly under attack by villains who are willing to not fight if you don't want to, and whose hair looks blue from afar, but suddenly turns green when you get up close.

Assistance will be provided, by a not fully-dressed professor, who dies if you tend to him when he's injured, but inexplicably makes a full recovery if you leave him to die.

Become indeared by a companion so trusing that she embraces you as an ally with just a few words even after telling her a million times that you plan on killing the rabbits, so brave that she fights along side you through ancient cockroach-infested ruins that somehow lead into a technologically advanced base, so caring that she sacrifices herself to save you after ignoring the fact that you were drowning until you fainted, but for some reason is unwilling to walk underneath a jammed shutter even if she'd be able to pass under it without even scraping her head.

Cave Story, a game praised for it's replay value due to different paths you can take, such as being a cheating and perverted selfish robot who doesn't put forth any effort to save his friends and abandons them to their doom, or who lives a clean relationship and is caring enough to save almost all his friends, but then abandons all but one of them at the last moment to live with her and one of the villlains who killed one of your friends, in what people claim is the best ending.

Experience the greatest independent video game of all time on any post-2006 device with buttons, courtesy of NICALiS, so that people can now pay money for glitchy versions of the once freeware game, and with altered dialogue that infuriated fans of the original.

Starring: (Quote) Ash Ketchum, (Curly Brace) Curly Fries, (Balrog) the Brave Little Toaster, (Misery) Le Miserables (lay-mee-zay-rahbl), (The Doctor) The Mad Scientist, (Jenka) Granny from Looneytoons, (King) Knuckles, and (Jack) The Red Barron.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH YES IT'S FINALLY DONE! The project I started back in summer 2011 and tried to finish last summer is now complete! The fat lady hasn't sung quite yet, because I have a bit of documenting to do, as well as another thing, but this is a huge step towards getting around to learning assembly and working on CBSR. The light at the end of the tunnel is vivid now.
I have a question. Are you really the same person who created the Cave Story with 4 endings?
    HaydenStudios

Then well done. I've heard that it takes quite a while to mod this game. And to add another ending, with new dialogue and everything. Truly well done.

I've never heard the term "virgin .exe", nor was I able to find a good answer with a Google search, but by the sound of it I'll assume you mean installing assembly hacks in an unmodified copy of the Cave Story exe.

Not sure what exactly gave you the idea that I'm a capable assembly hacker yet. My assembly learning has been on hold for over a year due to a project I started a while back that would likely get pushed even further wayside if I delved too deep into assembly (as you might recall being brought up in an earlier conversation), so I'm finishing that up before I continue learning. And I'm afraid that with what little I know about assembly, I can't even do some of the basic hacks I have planned yet for my next mod, and am unqualified to be instructing others, sorry.

You'd be better off asking someone like Noxid.

Just though I'd do a little count of the current post counts of members by name on the first page. Here's the data I got:

I didn't want to get too entranced by something because I was going to eat lunch soon. It didn't take me long actually, because the tools here allow you to view exclusive groups of members that start with a specific letter of the alphabet. And I only counted ones on the first page, because most members get down to one post by the end of the first page (some even get down to zero). I originally had a reply here that said it would be too much work to look through the ones that start with digits, until I looked at the member list alphabetically and realized how few members there are of that nature, so I quickly deleted my original reply and counted them. And of course the computer calculator made it that much easier. The whole thing only took me about thirty minutes.

Oh, also, for those of you who are interested. I'm actually getting kind of close to finishing that project that stands in between me and working on my next mod. I may even have it done by the end of this month.

Hey I tried running your timestamp generator today and got the following error:
    HaydenStudios
    HaydenStudios
My understanding of the Java programming language is rather narrow, so I can't make anything of that error message. What does a command line have to do with this? That jar should just open a stand-alone window. I'll assume you were running it like a regular exe file, but I'm not sure how doing that would show a dialog with that kind of message. What operating system are you running? It works for me on my Windows 7 64-bit and Windows XP 32-bit.
    duncathan
    duncathan
I'm on vista 32-bit. And no, I wasn't running it like a regular exe, because that wouldn't output the error but rather just crash. Using the line java -jar [name of file.jar] in command prompt will run the program but output any error messages to the prompt. Doing that gave me this error, not doing that will just make the jar not open.

After learning how the time stamp in quotes for IP Board works, I decided to write <a href='http://www.mediafire.com/?h7h2uob755ebmod' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='nofollow external'>a little program that automatically generates them for you based on the user's entered date and time</a>. Tell me what you think.

    @original comment: that's impressive!

And who lost who? IP Board won't allow me to view previous comments. And sorry to hear that.

Hey, whenever you decide to end the 4th ending joke, tell me what you want me to do to my video. I assume you want me to do something with it if you're going to do something with yours.
    HaydenStudios
    HaydenStudios
Yeah, you can just put an annotation at the beginning of the video saying it's fake, and provide what ever level of detail beyond that you want. I don't care whether or not you decide to post a comment announcing it, or if you update the description, but you can if you want to. If you want to mirror what I've done, then see the edits I've made to my two videos.
Hey thar, HaydenStudios... I really like your Cave Story fourth ending mod, (& I did believe it too, until I found that mod page lol.) and such... I was wondering if in the fourth ending mod, did you change any of the text that wasn't a part of the fourth ending? Like, if I went on and played your mod with the 3 endings (Leaving with Kazuma, Hell/Ballos, & Normal), would any text be different? Or, anything else, for that matter? By the way, you did a fantastic job on it, and you actually inspired me to make this account and start modding... Thanks <img src='http://www.cavestory.org/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/grin2.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

(Vanilla means Beta, right?) I just downloaded the Japanese game, patched it to English, and was looking at the Scripts in Yamashitas Farm, and the Boulder Chamber, and came across it, if thats what you mean.
    HaydenStudios
    HaydenStudios
No, vanilla means regular. And I just double-checked unmodified versions of the TSC scripts of those rooms, and did not find anything even remotely related to what you said was in there, not sure what kind of fresh copy of the game you were looking in.

I used the very top link (<a href='http://www.cavestory.org/downloads_game.php' class='bbc_url' title=''>http://www.cavestory...nloads_game.php</a>) "Cave Story Japanese), then the "English translation patch by Aeon Genesis" at the top of the "Translations" box, then, I patch it.
Hey, it's been awhile, thought I'd give you a update as I'm doing with my other friends. I've practically tried everything to fix my computer, linux, enclosure, techies, everything. So i't's going to be awhile until I become active again, there wasn't much I did with the mod before it died, but it was enough so that I don't remember or it was too complicated that I don't want to have to do it again. So I'll start working on it again in a few weeks, anyways, spring break for me is coming! Until then, I have a new mod, Kingdom Hearts mod, which work might also begin soon or after I'm done with my previous mod. Just though I'd let you know.

Some time when I get a bunch of free time, I'm going to take the reins and revamp the Cave Story wiki. It is seriously the worst wiki I have ever seen. Some of the information is biased and speculative, and the amount of effort put into each page is just awful.
    HaydenStudios
    HaydenStudios
It would be awesome to have someone with whom to collaborate on constructing a reliable knowledge base for Cave Story. However, I've still got about a week-and-a-half before the school year ends for me, and it's going out with a bang, so if you're implying that you want to start it up real soon, I wouldn't be able to jump on board and be real active super soon. And even then, there's still that project I want to make PROGRESS on that has suffered delay after delay after delay that I'll want to get a move on with.

I really think it would be best to try and save the current Cave Story wiki. Having two will confuse people, and the bad one would still exist. If we were to start a new one and use wikia, would it even be possible to have two wikis with the same name? If not, I wouldn't want to have to settle for a different name. And I wouldn't want to not use wikia, because I'm comfortable with using that site's editing tools, and wouldn't want to have to adjust to another. You have a wikia account? What's your user name there? I couldn't find you when I searched Dunc2403. Generally the way established users of a wiki run is that they look upon almost every minor edit of some new user they don't know as vandalism. They might be less likely to revert edits if a revamp of the page is thrown in with an edit that removes the biased or speculative information. And I believe that nobody would revert edits like that if a new page layout was pitched to and accepted by the admins.

I don't suppose we could add a wiki hosted by the Cave Story Tribute Site Forums..., for forum members to create and edit; but viewable by anyone.

Wow, it took the admins until yesterday morning to finally deal with it. <a href='http://www.mediafire.com/view/?f80mi2hdp9linp1' class='bbc_url' title='External link' rel='nofollow external'>Archived HTML document of the page for future reference</a>.

Also holy cow, I just realized that the person who added that page was Fastpager.
