You could also take the easy route, and notice that the spikes are crystals.

Crystals are typically magical.

Magical things typically glow.

Evil magical things glow red.

Spikes are red.

The reason that Santa is willing to put up with an infestation of instant death spikes is because it's a good light source for his house. Cluthulu had his spikes behind the walls in his abode originally, then they came out when his house collapsed during the Egg Corridor ??? incident.

The spikes are actually plants.

Can wat. Some plants have thorns on their stem, so maybe this one just has small leaves, and the stem lie flat on the ground, but the spikes jut out.

The plant has a base where the the spikes grow from (check the sprites). The spikes are just a natural defense. Though they are obviously hard enough and strong enough to run Quote through when they are at their full -127 length.

Just think. Those -10 spikes in first cave will grow into -127 spikes one day.

That sounds about right. Good comparison btw.

except there's no -24 or -42 or -63 or -77 or -116.

Why is the damage fixed anyway? And what's with the double-quote again?

There's a -5 though, I think.

Though when the plant's spikes get to a certain length, they stop wounding you (-5 or -10) and start impaling you (-127, a.k.a. dead). Especially since all -127 spikes in the game, as far as I can recall, are positioned where you can only fall on top of them and not walk into them.

It's possible to walk into the deathspikes in Santa's house, but it still counts as falling onto them.

Also, on a random connection to the current topic, I once had a pet plant named Spike when I was in Kindergarten.

Okay, how does this have to do anything with spikes?

And about that whole plant thing... Uhh, if they're thorns, they should be called thorns, not spikes. They're clearly called spikes.

*sigh* Time to look up the Japanese script I guess...

Can't be bothered now though.

Though I would like to point out that anyone looking at them would call them spikes as opposed to thorns, because they look like friggin' spikes.

Ones that grow up to something around a meter long and grow from a plant base? The dictionary indicates a thorn to be a "short, hard, pointed part of a stem or branch of a woody plant". The spike plants don't appear to be woody plants, and the spikes are neither short, nor growing from any form of branch or stem.

Haha! I have disproved another theory without giving one of my own! I have contributed absolutely nothing! A negative amount, perhaps!

Aren't there some in Hell that you can walk through?

Though there's really not much difference between a thorn and a spike...
