It kind of looks like it was made for a darkish environment, which might make using exaggerated contrast better. But I don't know because he hasn't told us and it isn't obvious.

Is it in a dark location of a light one? Will it be surrounded by saturated colors or relatively gray ones? Will this be in a cave, hospital, shopping mall or whale's stomach? Are there any other pieces from the environment you can show us for context? If you are worried about spoiling an aspect of your mod then let me be the first to tell you and I assure you this is not a personal statement, that your idea is probably either shitty or based on something from another game or movie even if you don't think it is, and no one cares or will have their experience ruined by seeing that fragment of it.

It's in a fairly gray environment, a slight modification of the tileset "pens" to be exact.

As for context, it have a fire lit on top, and the fire is orange and changes to red.

(the fire is off center because I took the pic in BL and didn't feel like disabling a lot of H/V triggers to get a good shot)

as a sprite, its rather plain. I think the head could use more detail.

 

Darkness. That sprite is so dark. Usually character sprites are made from brighter colors in general, I can't imagine trying to see that against a dark background like most of the ones in the game are.

Breaking away from the quote sprite is tough at 16x16 but I'd like to see someone try it.

 

I tried what you said -- going with ligher colours -- and I think I got it?
