I want to try and reduce the number of subforums if possible.

Satellite Lounge implies it's an accessory to the main forums, and therefore less important. General Discussion sounds much too formal for what it is, and also: "General Forums > General Discourse." I don't have a good suggestion off the top of my head, but I'll think of one later.

What about "Offtopic"? *shrug*

Actually, the Satellite Lounge is supposed to be a catch-all for stuff that doesn't have a forum. Its actual use was determined by the users, not the administration.

That does seem to work. Less subforums isn't something I have an opinion on though. I don't know why the name matters. As long as people get a general idea of what posts go there when they see it then it's fine.

 

I like andwhy's proposal. Also he IS the owner.

I do like Game development. Not because I'm considering that or anything, but we also have a few members that make games that aren't Cave Story mods. Please no one mention that mods are or aren't games. We have enough pointless arguements on this thread. Also no one argue whether or not there are stupid pointless arguements on this thread. Lets get this shit done and lock it

I changed what I posted slightly. There isn't much of a reason for Cave Story modification to have its own section, so it should just be a forum and three subforums.

Not sure why Game Development has its own section when it can easily be place under a under a general game umbrella section. Or why games and games alone would have their own section as well. It seems to just be adding unneeded clusted to the forums when you can umbrella them all under one branch with different branches under it.

Also, the distinction should be made to Forum Suggestions that it is for Disscussion as well and not only Suggestions.

And, if some people want it enough we might as well add an intelligent discussion forum such as "General Discourse". Basically having a, casual, intelligent and spam talking posts for the members.

What's different and why:
- Debates/Discourse added. This is as par Meta's suggestion. Her reasons are basically given there, and I agree with them.
- Spot made a normal forum, forum games a sub of it. If we decide to go for the serious/general/silly division of "General", then the silly section logically becomes one of the three main ones. Forum based games are something I would consider to fall into the category of silly/spam, so that's where they go.
- Entertainment media removed. I don't think this change matters much, but I didn't think that forum would be active enough to be separate from "General Discussion". Perhaps we could make it a sub if we wanted to keep it?
- Major restructuring of your "Cave Story" section. I have renamed it to the pixel section, as to be about pixel's works in general. General Discussion would encompass some of what the basic cs forum does atm, but also pixel and his other games.
- New "Cave Story" section. This would be anything cavestory that doesn't fall under music or theories.
- "Music" section generalized. As to be about any pixelmusic or orgs/pxtones in general.
- "Theories" section generalized. As to be about any pixeltheories.
- "technical issues" generalized. It pretty much is already, but this is to apply to any pixelgame.
All of that restructuring made more logical sense to me, and allowed for less unnecessary forums
- "Fan Art" section removed. I don't think there'd be much to talk about here.
- "Videos" and "Music" sections under "Gaming" removed. Again, I feel like they would be dead forums.

I also renamed a few sections, but that isn't a Big Deal.

 

I like Andy's layout more. I am doubtful of how well this forum for smart people will go, but if there is demand we must supply. I can see it having the same problem as the SPOT, i.e. "Is this post smart enough to be in here?"

Lace's layout seems more efficient (specifically the Pixel section) but andwhy's seems more straightforward. I don't really know, I don't see a problem with either of them; they're just different, from my perspective.

The titles "Debates and Discourse" and "Discussion" aren't very descriptive or catchy. I understand what you're getting at, but these need totally different names. One is for srs bzns and one is for fun stuff.

The "General Discussion" forum of the Pixel section is too vague. It can't include Cave Story, since we got that covered, so you might as well call it "Other Works" or something similar. Also rename the section from Pixel to Studio Pixel; we don't want to look like a cult.

Game Modification: aren't we just modifying Cave Story? If we're expanding that area too, keep the title.

I like "Game Development" more than "Game Creation" but there's not much difference anyway.

Homebrew games should probably be in Game Creation, since that's just people telling us about the game they made.

And most importantly, where are we going to put all the threads in the Media subforum? I don't want to make art less important to the forums. The Pixel Art thread and such shouldn't just be thrown in with Discussion.


As for Andy's, I have a few suggestions:

Remove the "Game Music" and "Game Videos" subforums, or combine them with something else. They don't get much traffic.

Make the SPOT a forum, not a subforum. It gets enough traffic, and it looks lonely being the only subforum (same goes for Lace's Forum Games).

Rename the Satellite Lounge to something awesomer. Just take off the Satellite and call it the Lounge, why not.

And again, the Homebrew thing.

I was intending to make game modification for all games, and such is it's title. I was also considering making pixel art a sticky, but I can bring back media. Since that is done, there are now TWO subs in general, so they aren't lonely no more.

 

Two more things: "Anything Else" can be called "Other Works" since we've never made a thread about the man himself (except that mermaid one...).
"Programming Help" should be "Development Help" since there's a lot more than programming that goes into making a game.

Other than that, I am completely happy with this format.
