• Hey everyone happy Christmas Eve we're aware of what's happened with the source code so to keep this simple absolutely don't post it on the site or use it to make mods with (it's not particularly preferable toward this end anyway) and tread lightly in general until we see how this settles, thanks to all and have a great holiday season -DT

You know that there are freeware programs to open .rar files, right?
http://www.7-zip.org/
Here's a link to 7-Zip. It's one of the most popular free ones. You can download the installer (just 1 mb), install it, and you can have the archive extracted in less than a minute. I'm not even exaggerating.

I spontaneously NEEDED to play some Cave Story today so I downloaded it, unzipped this mod and played it. In about two hours. Nonstop.

Why are there so many awesome unfinished mods? D:

If you were to set out to finish all the mods that are unfinished you would be at this for the next ten years

Meh, it's fun to finish some of them. I hope I can someday be "that guy (whose name I don't quite remember) to turn to if there is a hack someone doesn't wanna finish."

And really lunarsoul, you should start your own mod if you're that serious.

Why do people keep calling mods "hacks"?

Really, now.

Well, because they are. You're hacking cave story with hack software. Mod is just a bunt word for hack.

You could argue that the mod itself is a hack even if the modder is not a hacker. The mod has been hacked, not by the individual modder, but by the software they used, but it still has been hacked, so it's not necessarily wrong to call it a hack.

Still, hack is a subcategory of mod, so really you could call anything that's a hack a mod and not be wrong.

I guess you're right.
But this is off-topic!

the second you change a byte of data, it's a mod
start playing with the engine/coding/enemies/routines, it's a hack
