• Hey everyone happy Christmas Eve we're aware of what's happened with the source code so to keep this simple absolutely don't post it on the site or use it to make mods with (it's not particularly preferable toward this end anyway) and tread lightly in general until we see how this settles, thanks to all and have a great holiday season -DT

Why is Quote a mute?

He speaks the language of the mime. Hand motions for the win~

(Too bad there's no real posing in the game to show such actions ._.)

No, he could speak binary. On a computer, every letter is an 8-digit code. So something like this (I don't know binary): 01000110 01101100 10011010 10000110 00101001 would spell "quote".

Um, no. Binary is a numeral system which uses only the digits 0 and 1. While it is true that binary is used as a way of coding information, you would still need the CS universe to have agreed upon a coding system, for instance ASCII, and all the creatures to be able to decode the information from Quote's beeping/blinking/whatever for him to be able to communicate with all the others. It would be easier to ask a 12 years old kid to build a speech synthesizer for him.

Hey, maybe they all speak in binary, and it's translated for us.
Also, I was thinking of the whole ASCII thing. I don't really know about much in that area.

Well, that doesn't really solve our problem. Why isn't Quote's speech translated for us?

Because Pixel wanted him to be a silent protagonist.

Which, by the way, renders the entire point of all the characters "speaking in binary" moot. Happy yet?

Quote told one of the Cthulthu that he lost his memory, and Kazuma that there was no keyhole to that room in Grasstown. Kazuma still thought Quote was human at the time, and still believed so after speaking with him. Quote also would have been incapable of cummunicating with Kazuma non-verbally at the time. Basically Quote speaks the same language as everyone else in the game. No morse code, no number systems, no cyphers, no miming, no psychic powers, just plain old spoken [insert language of the game here].

Which is precisely why this thread is basically not being taken seriously anymore because the question it is asking has already been definitively answered.

He said "..." and he meant "..."! God, I love that line...
As for the language, I don't really see the need to identify the in-universe language, but personally I'd go with Japanese as well, since the original is, well, original.
