What did you assume when you first started playing Cave Story?

Same here, then I followed it up with viewing the Tribute Site. It wasn't until I had a much better connection speed that I got a chance to finally play and enjoy Cave Story. Of course, getting to the point...rtnario said:

Monster X was a pain the first time I fought it... And the extra 4 or 5 times after that, but it was worth it to see what happens after finally winning the battle.
It was absolutely awesome to fight the enemy while Curly assists me in the Labyrinth...
But it was saddening when I couldn't save her after the Core room flooded...
And when I reached Final Cave (The easier one, that is), I immediately thought Blaster Master when noticing the red 'Lava' (Though I was slightly positive it could've been something else, but still harmful regardless).

when I first fought Monster X, I was like "WhAT TEh FUxx BulLEt no Hit thing!" and then I realised that it opened up to reeval some brain like goo balls so I started to hit them but his hp didn't go down but they did react to a bullet as if it were hitable and so that's how I got to ownzorz pwnzorz Monster X www.rolloverme.com

Interesting first impressions
My first impression was complete confusion lol So many strange sights like Balrog, the Mimigas, egg Corridor... I can't remember what misconceptions I might have had my first time. I don't think I knew I was a robot for a long time...

I thought it would turn out as a combination of platformer and puzzle game. Until I left the first room that is.
Upon reaching Mimiga Village, I knew this game was going to be awesome.
