I have an idea!
We could make up a NEW word, such as slimp, and extend the length of one of the phonemes to show how much respect/awesome it deserves.

Example: "Wowzers! Have you seen Lace's slimmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmp?"

Or we could make it an adjective, and simply cll everything mods, with varying degrees of slimpitude.

Example1: "Huh, I'd say that Lace's mod, while the most fabulous thing on the planet, wasn't very slimp at all."
Example2: "Noxid's mod was so slimmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmp it made WTF story look like pinochle!"

This can be done I believe with setting one flag in CE, so not really a hack by my standards. Still well within the realm of engine compliance.

Ah. Not a hack, then.

I was unsure whether wall-passing was a flag or an intrinsic property of the Snake, and splicing two different weapons together would indeed be a hack.

Is this really such a big deal?

By my definition, if you have a firm grasp on Assembly, and this is apparent in your mod, you deserve to call it a hack.

That said, I still prefer to call either of them mods.

The issue at hand is Jenka's Nightmare, and I believe the term "mod" to be much more appropriate than "hack", as there's not much hacked stuff (the only hack I can think of is the Spur that goes through walls, and I'm not sure about that).
*Ahem*.
If you're wondering if this is revealing a big secret for JN, the answer is YES.

I believe that Cave Story mods are both.

To make it simple, if you are editing files that the engine is written to interpret (images, maps, tsc, etc) then that is modding as far as I'm aware. If you edit the engine itself, or a library, such as a dll file for example, then that would be hacking.

Although even the most basic mod will see modifications to the mapdata or starting info (pos, event, health, map, etc), although instead of you hacking the exe yourself the editor does it for you instead.

So since no-one wants to call it a "mod/hack", and with 90% of the process being modding, the word "mod" suffices. Everything else (ASM, minor hex edits) is just icing on the proverbial cake.

...

..mmm..cake..

Oh, come on. Anyone in a position to make use of that information would either know it or be within 10 seconds of knowing it, and it's not plot.

Unless you're referring to the fact that the Spur exists, which is pretty guessable without any help and also isn't plot (that I'm aware of).

Besides, it's already been quoted.

...I'm not sure I understand.
And you got one too many [/SPOILER]s there.

Already fixed.

Basically, anyone who is in a position to make use of the fact that the Spur goes through walls would already have the Spur, and would hence be very close to discovering it for themselves anyway.

But that the spur is changed at all is a surprise.
Except, of course, when everyone reveals these things.

Which is... the only time you can make use of it?

I haven't revealed how to do anything or any plot details, only some game mechanics... which become obvious before you get the chance to use them anyway. How's that a spoiler?

Well, it's obvious that there's something different, I meant. The specific details are rather easy to work out once that's known.

Anyways, better actually test JN sometime soon. I have acquired TNG and it is eating my time.

Yeah, maybe.

Anyone notice this is an off-topic argument in a topic that was off-topic to begin with?

EDIT: TNG?

these here forums need a "show spoilers by default" button or at least one to open the whole tree of them in a case of nested spoilers.

or for that matter, disallow empty spoiler tags

They wouldn't technically be empty, since it was a spoiler, that had a spoiler... that had a spoiler!
