• Hey everyone happy Christmas Eve we're aware of what's happened with the source code so to keep this simple absolutely don't post it on the site or use it to make mods with (it's not particularly preferable toward this end anyway) and tread lightly in general until we see how this settles, thanks to all and have a great holiday season -DT

No, your suggestions are entirely welcome! Just understand that we may or may not choose to take them!

this thread has officially been zombied.
okay, you guys gonna post anything about grammar or syntax or morphology, phonology, etc? there is no such thing as a real language that isn't spoken.

Pretty sure this project died, Lace. As neat an idea as it would be, it would be a) cumbersome for most people to learn, and b) not useful at all. And this is isn't really a problem for me, but it would be nerdier than making up a language for Klingons.
That said, it would be incredible if this language was made.

Can't they just speak english? Maybe when Sue siad the 'symbols on quote's hat' were in a language foreign to the island, like... French! :D

There is an entire thread about the symbols on Quote's hat. I like to believe that they are English in the original version and Japanese in the English version.
And yes, it would seem that the Mimigas speak English, since everyone can understand them.

pah, mimish was translated into a language we could understand so the game would be fun.
and I like making languages, so I really don't care how nerdy making mimish would be. so... yeah.

anyways, if we ever do make a mimish, it needs more then just symbols. feed me. what should the syntax be like, what type of "alphabet" the morphology! mmm....

Yes that is the case. Keeping that in mind, as well as the death of Atravir's script, it is fairly pointless to continue this under the label of a language used by Mimigas.

I could continue this, but not as Mimish. It still is an awesome concept for a language.

Why not make it Mimish? It has no use, sure, but if you're going to make the lanuage you might as well associate it with Cave Story, which would be cooler (and nerdier. What teh sense make?) than just creating a language out of the blue.
But if you are REALLY DEAD SET against calling it Mimish, name it after the forums. Somehow. For it has spawned here.

That would have a whole different meaning to anyone who speaks Japanese, but I guess it's good since that's what the forum is named for anyway. Future.
I'm probably going to start drawing symbols because I have no life, and calligraphy and making up languages has always interested me.

if i was void, i would put a title here.

kewl.
I was thinking, since full logographic writing systems (japanese or chinese) are really hard to make, we could have a few symbols for the most importanant stuff such as modifiers and bukkets, etc. and have the rest of the script an alpha-syllabary or an abjad or whatever. since most of you ain't linguisticky dudes, abjads are alphabets with no vowels (like hebrew) and an alpha-syllabary has both alphabetic letters and letters for each syllable, which are used depending on the syllable. for instance, we could have the core and final part of a syllable using the syllabary and the preceding parts in an alphabet so a word like win would be spelled w-in. and scald would be spelled s-c-ald. gots it?

in other news, I was working on the number system a bit, how would this sound? (all syllables are pronounced SEPERATELY, so et-han, not ethan)
Code:
[0] {start} noet (noun) etnon (adjective)
[1] {one} soet (noun) etson (adjective)
[2] {two} fiet (noun) etfin (adjective)
[3] {three} laet (noun) etlan (adjective)
[4] {four} paet (noun) etpan (adjective)
[5] {five} niet (noun) etnin (adjective)
[6] {six} tiet (noun) ettin (adjective)
[7] {seven} haet (noun) ethan (adjective)
[8] {eight} muet (noun) etmun (adjective)
[11] {nine} soso (noun) soson (adjective)
[12] {ten} fiso (noun) sofin (adjective)

and since nonsense is probably the most important thing on these forums, that would be kapokaon, at least until we get other words. who cares that it means that (concerning fish) is nonsense? it's osm!

as for next steps, what are you ppl thinking about phonology (how it sounds)?

Wut? What do you want me to do? I can't make any symbols today.
As for what it sounds like, it will probably have similar pronunciation to English because that is what the majority of the members here speak.

mmm....
phonology.

okay, hows this? (all in IPA)

vowels: / ä ə æ e i o u /
plosives: / p ph t th k kh ʔ /
fricatives: / ɸ θ s ʃ x h /
affricates: / pɸ tʃ kx /
nasals: / m n ŋ ɴ /
approximates: / l ɹ w j /

tually, since you guys don't speak IPA, I'll explain the ones that aren't dang obvious.

ä - like the o in mom, or the a in la.
ə - like in duh.
æ - like in mac or whack or track.
*h - means it's aspirated, which means you sorta blow when you say the letter. lol
ʔ - glottal stop, english has this, but doen't really have aletter for it. it's between the uh and oh in uh-oh.
ɸ - f
θ - th
ʃ - sh
x - somewhere between an h and a ʃ.
ŋ - like in ing
ɴ - same thing, but you make the noise farther back.
ɹ - r
j - y (without the vowel part)

Why did you need to use crazy symbols for these? What's wrong with Enlgish letters? I are not language expert!

cuz anyone who actually knows ipa would get really confused, since ys just a vowel (and a different one, too) rs a trill and f is, eh, okay, I could've used f, it's pretty mauch the same sound.
