Hmmm, given it's music we can have small and big red notes for life and small and big blue notes for exp., with the exp bar simply being a new kind of exp. but still an..... exp. bar.
Kind of like in "the Game".
That way it's new, but not over the top complex and faithful to the game's core, being music.
A nice little touch to not shove the music concept too much into the player's face while still keeping them involved with the concept itself.
The exp.can even be something like small jewels with the enemy's essence in it or something.
It would make sense in this way that stronger enemies drop more exp.
