This is why we can't have nice things. You actually have to be the change you want to see in the forums. Others will follow.

I'm not going to force my friends out of a program they're fine with by leaving completely, and I don't want my computer to suffer either
So yeah...if you need me, see you on skype

Well, thanks for setting up this thing, Noxid. Not sure if I'll actually end up using it, despite my statement about how shitty new Skype is, but I and probably other people appreciate you doing this anyway.

Couldn't you just grab an installer for an older version and turn off automatic updates? It would solve at least one issue

I did install the Cisco Jabber app...which I assume is the one that I'm supposed to be using...but I haven't gotten it to continue past the second screen. I don't really know what I'm doing, to be honest.

The app isn't as clear cut about its fields as Pidgin is, which isn't surprising.

Polaris doesn't have access to a computer for the most part, so he wields a mobile device instead.

Yes, what Enlightened said. And even dual wielded phones can do like 10% of what computers can, at best. ^_^;

There's technically a computer I could use for it, but I'm really not comfortable installing a chat thing on a computer used by others, and I'm cutting it close as it is. Might raise questions that I don't want to answer or lie about. So don't feel obliged to explain anything, because you already adequately did for Pidgin, and I'm fairly lousy in real-time chat anyway. I simply won't be there for now. We'll see what happens after Christmas, I suppose.

I put xabber on my phone and it seems to be serviceable
there's a weird quirk to it where you cant specify advanced connection options from the start, so you have to create a not-working connection then modify its settings and change your host from noxid.ca to chat.noxid.ca

I could give more detailed instructions later

Skype is going down the shithole fast, yeah. Everyone else I know still uses it though so I'm sticking to it for now.

Someone kicked me from the skype group like a year ago, I guess I wasn't active enough in it XD I just drift around here every month or so so whatever

Oh no. Skype has been asking me to update for the past week or so.

Not today, Satan!

Have you selected in Options to have it not auto-update (Option -> Advanced -> Automatic Updates)? Or is it still trying each time you sign in?
On a slightly related note, Skype auto-updated on me, and apparently one of the things they took out was the little easter egg where your pencil would turn into a cat if you held down three or more keys for a little bit.
0/10 worst update

Huh. So far it hasn't popped up for me since I turned off automatic updates. Maybe it's because I downgraded from the updated Skype to my older version?

I've used telegram for a while now, and it's great. Only problem is, you need a phone for verification. Could be a problem for some people.
