• Hey everyone happy Christmas Eve we're aware of what's happened with the source code so to keep this simple absolutely don't post it on the site or use it to make mods with (it's not particularly preferable toward this end anyway) and tread lightly in general until we see how this settles, thanks to all and have a great holiday season -DT

Re: Cave Story Officially Announced for WiiWare

I'll just find a way to send 50 dollars to Pixel personally and not bother with the Wii thank you.

I am more likely to pay for the original PC version than the Wii version anyway.

When it's as something as epic as Cave Story, and supports the original creator, of course, it's brilliant.
I'd buy it three times, if I could. :rolleyes:

You could gift it?

More Crazy talk

Hmm, well this is interesting...
There was another update after the Cave Story WiiWare release date announcement, on the same day. {Probably overlooked in the hype :p}
Anyways, it was an interview between Derek Yu (creator of Aquaria..?) and Pixel!
Besides stuff I don't think most of you would be interested in {Pixel's favorite movie?}, I did see something that should be of interest to everyone here...

I still receive requests for a sequel to Cave Story even now. I don’t have any ideas for a sequel to Cave Story, but if I started making it, I believe I could come up with something. Cave Story was actually developed in that manner.
Apparently, a sequel isn't that far out of the question...
But it's certainly not even being planned.
I'm still not sure if I'd like one, though...

From interview:
D: Have you worked on anything else game-related in the meantime?

P: I’m working a little bit on an RPG, but I’m still barely on the basic systems.

Wewt.

Because paying for a game you already played for free but with updated graphics and a few new things is totally smart, right?

See Eversion vs. Eversion HD

Not a good example. Eversion HD was just Eversion with a bigger window. HOLY FUCKING SHIT IT BLEW MY MIND.

It also had better backgrounds.

But really that was more an example of "Proove it to yourself".

Note the "oo".

Honestly I would prefer a prequel over a sequel.

The Wiiware version is a different game from the PC version in that the PC version is freeware.

I'm not sure about the EXACT rules, but with freeware I'm pretty sure that a.) it can be distributed fully intact, or b.) be distributed modified, providing the user knows it is modified and that credit for the original is given somewhere.

Since, as far as I know, copyright protection can't be sought retroactively, and that the PC and Wiiware are two totally different game, that modding the PC version will remain legal.

HOWEVER, the Wii version is a different case in that it's a liscenced product (you pay for a liscence to use it); thus meaning any copying would be considered piracy, as would distrubuting a modified copy.

But believe me - People will try.

Nothing will change in regards to the freeware release. We were personally assured about this. Though trying to mod CSPC into CSWii would be an exception.

Ha, that would be sorta difficult. As with before, it won't stop some people from trying.

Nicalis will be posting updates to the extent that I won't post about them. This thing will take quite a while to read.

Here it comes!!

There's also a cool little countdown timer on the blog now, counting down towards the 22nd!
{For some reason, though, it counts seconds, minutes, hours, days and years, but not months...}

{That's because months aren't "standartized", you know.}
Anyway, I wonder if Cawii Story's release will have any... unforseen consequences, positive or negative.

Is it possibly due to the fact that they finally set on a date of release? (hard to believe, but it's true!)

Oh, and what T-Jack said.

Also, it seems like Nicalis is giving away the clocks to other blogs. I noticed GoNintendo has the same clock, but with different artwork...

Only one I can think of is that the game could get almost no attention because of major titles releasing the same month... (Mega Man 10, Pokemon GoldHeart/SoulSilver, Splinter Cell: Conviction, FFXIII, Bad Company 2, Resident Evil V: Gold, to name a few)

...and now, another update:
http://www.nicalis.com/blog/2010/03/02/its-onto-bushlands/#respond

And for comparison, the god-awful sound quality from October of 2008:
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/grasstown-gameplay-cave-story/41463

I think they did a much better job, though I'm still not convinced this is a worthy update, music wise...

Something about the music on the blog
I find this new version just doesn't have the same spunk as pixel's. It's nice and all, but a different flavour altogether. Then again, so is the whole grasstown/bushlands thing from my perspective.
