Welcome to the third annual Kanpachis! Our good friend Captain Fabulous has retired from hosting this event, so with permission from Noxid, I have volunteered to take up the mantle and be your host of the 2012 Kanpachis.

For those of you relatively new to these forums, the annual Kanpachis is an event which takes place at the end of each year where users who have helped make these forums a better place receive recognition for their contribution by being awarded medals in the category they contributed best.

We will carry over the awards done from last year, and the new ones added or ones that are not extensively self-explanatory will have descriptions by them.

Best contributor to Cave Story Discussion - An award that DT suggested last year but that no one acted upon so I decided to add since I'm running the Kanpachis this year. The name is quite self-explanatory, I think.
"Best" contributor to Cave Story Discussion - An award that serves to poke fun at users who express opinions or make posts in Cave Story discussion which are looked upon by the community as an odd and/or funny angle.
Best New Member - Awarded to the user who has been voted on as having deviated from the norm by being a competent, mature, and polite member unlike a lot of immature kids we get these days. The user must have joined in the year corresponding to the Kanpachis event to qualify. (I.E., for this one it is 2012)

RULES
- Nominations began on January 4th, and were meant to end on January 24, but got extended to February 16th due to a delay in the implementation of a new voting system.
- Voting was originally going to take place from January 25th, to on January 30th at 11:59 PM Though there was a delay due to an offer made and seeing whether or not this alternate way of voting will be done. It has now been made a reality, and voting will take place for a week.
- The winners will be announced after the voting period has ended
- You are allowed to nominate as many users for a single category as you like, but please don't nominate a ton for the sake of nominating
- You are allowed, and even encouraged to some extent, to nominate yourself, as you are more likely to remember your own deeds than others are. But don't be obnoxious and nominate yourself for everything- only nominate yourself for things you think are worth a shot, and don't get real upset if you don't win.
- Nominations are to be posted in reply to this thread
- Any nominations made after the nominating period is over will be ignored
- You are allowed, and to an extent encouraged, to suggest categories for awards
- DO NOT post your votes in reply to this thread. This is a private ballot, and we DON'T want voters to be influenced by one-another.

Best contributor to Cave Story discussion: andwhyisit
He is one of the most competent, objective, and insightful contributors to the threads these days on the general discussion and theories section. While his posts are not the longest, as well as few and far between due to how busy he is, he still makes posts that best represent both sides of the argument, and point out facts that few have.

Best New Member:

1) Duke Serkol - Rising above the usual maximum twelve-year-old maturity level, Duke Serkol has posted some interesting theories, and is an amazing contributor to the discussion of any mod he shows interest in. Perhaps I am just biased for him because him and I have shown to have an uncannily similar taste in mods (as well as thought process in developing them), and that he and I have been discussing to death how to do things in my next mod that it's only a matter of time before I get going, but I still think he deserves some recognition for being quite different from most new members.

2) 43501 - Nobody expected this. Another girl who had a maturity level that was not only above thirteen, but even eighteen. This was a total breath of fresh air from the long stream of immature kids that had been joining. Almost everyone here worshiped the ground she walked on for at least the first three weeks of her membership. Now she may have been the most decorated new member, but this was probably mostly because of the common twelve-year-old factor, and also that she began by posting in the introduction thread, and gave some detail on herself, unlike the other two who probably would have gotten a bit more recognition if they had done the same.

3) Mosaic - This was quite a surprise to me. When I saw him, I thought: "What? A new member expressing such maturity? What sorcery is this?" Mosaic has always been nice, and very insightful to the orgs I've had to show off, as well as being a good addition to my friends list.

4) BhadRebelle - Another member who showed surprising maturity, kindness, and understanding of how a forum works upon joining. Her profile is one of my favorites to see updated, and I highly admire her stance on backseat moderation.

Most improved Member: Kanpachi

When she joined, she made pretty spammy posts and threads that really didn't add anything to the discussion, and was really kindof annoying. I found it funny in a way, as she had the kind of energy and happiness that made for a fun person to talk to, but her lack of understanding how to use a forum detracted from the browsing experience. After suffering a two-week post ban, she turned around so quickly I hardly even noticed her do it. Over the course of two weeks, she suddenly learned to apply her energy in a way that is no longer spammy, but can at times contribute to Cave Story discussion, and as well can sometimes be so funny and cute that sometimes I just want to hug her. Don't tell her I said that :3

Best First Post:

1) xwatchmanx - Out of nowhere, a user worth one rupee popped out and gave a big wall of text with a strong argument against the consensus that was going on, and continued in the discussion.

2) Sue_Obsessed - With the very first post, that person had good grammatical structure, was polite, and discovered a huge Game-breaking glitch. I make no attempt whatsoever to deny that I'm probably just nominating this person because it was a reply to the thread for one of my mods.

I, personally, find it stupefying that he didn't get any recognition last year. Maybe it's just that I wasn't around to see his early posts, but by looking at how nice he was to windy, he seems like the same jolly good fellow he is now. I have never seen him make any post that even comes close to being rude, any and all rare occasions on which VMs of his have even come close to what some people might call backseat moderation have been worded in an overly nice manner, and posts of his that showed admonishment and whose level of suggestiveness went far below what the moderation team generally condones, he felt it necessary to apologize for. His lack of feeling it necessary to tell users off for poor posting and accepting with open arms onto his friends list members who were so misunderstood on these forums (I.E. Windy, Aar, Dash360, DualHack, etc.) is a characteristic of kindness seen by hardly any of the other members here. Maybe my opinion is tainted by the fact that he has given continuous praise on all of my work I've posted here, and been kind to me regardless of what most other members were saying at the time, but I think Tpcool takes this award by a storm.

Can I make a suggestion? Remove "Best VM Conversation," because we don't have those anymore, "Best Theory*," because we don't have those anymore, and "Best Name Change," because we don't have those anymore.

I'm not sure if your definition of a name change is different from mine, or if you haven't noticed that Mixer8421 and Kwote have both had their user names changed.

I definitely see the drop in quality in posts when comparing these days to threads from 2008, but I personally think that there has still been some posts with quality, some even from newer members. But I suppose all the people here who hang out on IRC consist of more than half of the moderation team here, and a lot of the bigger voices on these forums, so if that's the consensus, I suppose some element of that should be added. I don't want to completely get rid of giving out some awards on actual merit, so I'm going to put best, and "best" into different categories unless a mod/admin says otherwise.

I suppose that since even a thoroughly respected moderator endorses these awards given to terrible posts, it's a go. Just to let you know, Ballos' fifth form was started in 2011, not 2012. Also, both that thread and that picture were so freaking overrated imo, I cannot believe that the thread starter won the award for best first post.

 

The kanpachis are about having fun and remembering the good times of the last year, and my favourite moments are the ones that make me laugh. The entire thing doesn't have to be about "bad" posts, but they at least deserve some mention since it makes up a good portion of the forum experience

Now that you put it that way, I'm much more keen on this idea.

So which categories if not all of them should have negatives? We probably shouldn't have a negative for nicest user, as that wouldn't be very funny. Right now, I'm thinking it would only be worth having silly versions of these:

And Noxid's thread nominations will be added to the list as soon as either we've reached a decision on which categories should have silly versions, or nobody gives a crap and I just add only the ones I in my personal opinion felt necessary to add.

I propose a new category that is not simply one of the best members of 2012, but rather most misunderstood member since the beginning of the Kanpachis. My nomination for this is windsofwinds. Windy was permabanned twice. The first time, sure, he was bad, but I honestly don't think he had done anything really deserving of a permanent ban. But that just wasn't enough. After Noxid had been kind enough to give him another chance, he still got banned, regardless of his considerable improvement during his initial ban. and to add insult to injury, Doublethink's reason for rebanning him was because in the future, the mods and admins will not be unbanning members for personal amusement. Following that, I spent at least two weeks searching for some way to make contact with windy. Eventually, I managed to find his email address, and sent him an email telling him that I believed that he shouldn't have been banned, and asked that he could remain my friend. After 6 months, I finally got a reply. I won't tell you the details, but the main points were that he was sorry for not replying earlier, as he had no friends besides those on the Cave Story forums, and that he therefore had no reason to check his email. I'm now his only friend! And after all this, he's still remembered as that one guy with horrible spelling and insane qualities. I think that he deserves to be shown that he's not universally hated. For this I nominate him.

Alright, I have added the most misunderstood award and added windy to he list, as well as nominated DualHack and Toxicman.

Additionally, due to the lack of input from other users, I just went ahead and used my own judgement to decide what silly categories would be best, and have added Noxid's nominations.

I have also nominated Quote99 for "best" contributor to Cave Story discussion. I'm not actually altogether making fun of him, as he does give a very interesting angle on things, it's just different from the way a lot of us think. Another thing that probably helps is that most of his posts were made when he was twelve, and that he's German which means his English isn't very good.

Second of all you really ought to learn to be more patient. That goes for several things, but specifically the silly categories were mentioned just last night. Not everyone is going to jump to give their input immediately.

Alright, sorry if I came across as impatient, I just didn't want to have a bunch of unlisted nominations to pile up and need a really time-consuming edit to the OP to take place, as that one took long as it was. I'll leave the nominations as they are until more user input comes in.

 

No offense, but given that The Kanpachis were forced in the first place and the creator himself didn't want to carry them on makes this feel mega forced. But, oh well.

Your nominations have been added to the list aside from those bits of fan art because unless stated otherwise by a mod or admin of these forums, only members of the CSTSF are eligible for winning any Kanpachis.

In addition, the rule for what year a mod corresponds to for these awards is whether or not it saw any releases that year with new content. For example, WTF? story was started in 2008 or 2009, but it won 2011 since it saw a release that year. And I'd say that with all of the bugs fixed and the extra cutscene added, as well as extra bits of dialogue added here and there throughout the first three months of 2012, my mod would qualify for 2012 either way. Also thanks!
