I thought he meant before going through the labyrinth, although I didn't think that was possible either.

Yes. MG means "Machine Gun".
No, if you return that way, he'll say he's searching for the Polar Star. There isn't a sign to say he's out.

SPG means ShInInG PhAnToM Gardebiter.

It's obvious that Quote and Curly were made by different designers. Why?

The puns for names.
{ Curly Brace -> Brace is last name.
" Quote Marx -> Different last name required for symmetry.

I read that first in a fanfic, but its origin is obvious.

Quote = Quotation = Quotation Marks = "" = Quote Marks = Quote Marx
Yes. Pixel didn't give Quote a last name, but he was originally called "Curly Brace" in the BETA version of cave story (hence the hat) but was later renamed to Quote, guess who got his old name. :D

To reitterate - MG = Machine Gun.
Where did SPG come from?
Aaaaand...
If you get the MG, before you get telafragged to the Laby, you can go to the Village and fly up to visit the First Cave.

Personally, my impression was more of a 'brothers in arms,' or 'inseperable-friends' thing; Curly is willing to sacrifice herself for Quote because they've already been through near-death situations, and he's demonstrated himself to be, overall, better suited to defeating Misery/Doctor and saving the Mimigas.
But then, I just object to romantic interpretations of main characters' relationships with their fellows whenever ambiguity allows me to, unless it's something unconventional. >.> <.<

On another note, I'd always thought of the Polar Star as a fairly basic weapon model, maybe even standard among surface-army light personnel guns, so the one you get from the Hermit Gunsmith has no particular significance of its own. Curly's Machine Gun, similarily, was something she just found and made use of, although I suppose that the idea that she had it when fighting the Doctor and just managed not to lose it is reasonable, also.

And, didn't the Hermit Gunsmith say that he found the polar star, and was trying to make it better? (I might be imagining things... again)
