The spikes always have a red hue, and I agree that they are probably that colour as a warning. They are not poisonous from what I can tell, but rather are strong and hard. They get harder and longer as they grow until the spikes reach around a meter long and hard enough to penetrate steel. We can assume that one of the creatures on the island feeds on the base of this plant, so naturally these plants flourish and mature in places where their base cannot be reached, especially in pits since the plant is very well defended from above.

The creatures that feed on the spike plants are most likely Critters. Both they and the plants are widespread on the entire Island, and the Critters don't really look like predators, so I guess they're herbivores. The blobby bodies look rather vulerable, and thus unable to get through the larger spikes on their own, which probably explains the shooting Critters in the Labyrinth. The projectiles are a good weapon and remove the spikes well. Aaargh, not again...

At a few points in the Labyrinth, the shooting Critters are sitting in a small spike bed. But since all the enemies in Cave Story are immune to each other, I guess it's not really worth discussing.

Or IS IT?

Perhaps those critters adapted to the new environment, feeding on scraps of garbage and metal instead of the usual spike diet?
Could explain their different forms of attack....

Or they're actually hiding behind those spikes.

Damn those Critters and their mastery of the third dimension! If only Quote could unlock the secrets of being 3D...

Yeah, three dimensions in Cave Story. How did you think Quote was able to walk around the NPCs? Or the houses? Or, well, anything else?

Then how does he always hit the spikes, while anything else that falls in is left completely unharmed?

Your hole is full of logics!

Because he's dumb? Or maybe it's because the creatures (that are native to the Island) are used to gettng around the spikes (which have only a little space around them), while Quote is an amnesiac newcomer.

You said behind, not inbetween.
Be more clear next time =P

I never meant inbetween in the first place. I'm sorry for not being clear the first time, but I meant that there is only a little space between the spike plants and the surrounding walls.

You'd think an amnesiac newcomer wouldn't be able to destroy the Doctor, Ballos and the Core (twice).

My point was that Quote's awesome enough to save an entire island by himself, but he can't dodge some friggin spikes?

Um, he DIDN'T save it by himself, he had the incredible help of Curly Brace.

Besides, Spikes > Ballos
Never saw him do 127 damage...

*Looks at T-Jack's Edit*
Why, no problem!
I aim to please :D

Spikes < Ballos
Never saw them destroy a kingdom out of rage and madness.
Or... did they?
