The spikes always have a red hue, and I agree that they are probably that colour as a warning. They are not poisonous from what I can tell, but rather are strong and hard. They get harder and longer as they grow until the spikes reach around a meter long and hard enough to penetrate steel. We can assume that one of the creatures on the island feeds on the base of this plant, so naturally these plants flourish and mature in places where their base cannot be reached, especially in pits since the plant is very well defended from above.
