Presumably, Quote's got some sort of internal power source. He doesn't seem to require fuel, and he's too small for a solar panel, so we can only assume he runs on nuclear fusion (not fission; uranium is fuel). So when Quote dies, a nuclear fusion reactor is suddenly getting smashed, possibly in mid-fusion. It's a wonder that he doesn't take out half the level with him.

Fusion requires fuel, too.
Hydrogen, to be exact.
And the only way to feasibly generate the type of hydrogen needed is by double beta decay of lithium, or by bombarding hydrogen with neutrons.
I'd say fission is more likely, as the set amount of fuel could serve for many years assuming a near-constant energy demand.
Personally, my money would be on an organic bio-reactor, something that produces methane and other simple hydrocarbon chains for use in a fuel cell.
With an organic reactor, nearly any organic matter could be fuel (dead leaves, twigs, food etc.) and as such, fuel would be readilly available.

The answer of course is that Quote is held together by magic, and the spikes have some type of anti-magic spray on them which makes Quote go poof.

 

Considering the existence of magic in Cave Story's world, I would assume that their technology works under different rules. Outside of what is seen in-game there is no real way of knowing how physics are supposed to work, so we normally don't bring up the subject. Plus considering how advanced in technology they are to us, I wouldn't make any assumptions on how their technology works.

I wouldn't say that. Cyborgs are part organic, yes; robots are generally primarily artificial. However, if you put an organic "skin" over a robot, then it's still a robot.

The Terminators are robots (at least the original model). The Borg may not be, since they start as purely organic augmented by technology.

 

Quote and Curly aren't cyborgs since there is nothing in the game that hints at them being anything other than pure robots.
