The challenge:
to make something new out of Cave Story, something nobody has ever seen in a Cave Story mod.
It can be obscure, or truely spectactular, depending on your tastes
The entries:
As for what happens now, well, I'm not entirely sure. DT has some words on the judging methods:
DoubleThink said:
Before this goes on any further can I sperg out about the scoring for a minute? Okay I'm going to do that now.
I don't quite like the setup at the moment. 40 points come from basically making no technical mistakes and only 30 come from the community. IMO a better balance would be more like this, at the least:
-30 points of techincal/'negative' marking, with the losses for each error readjusted if necessary. While this does deserve some emphasis, I don't really see it making much of a difference to most mods anyway. There will need to be some way to judge this as well, but hopefully it will be mostly objective?
-30 points for creativity, based on judging panel average. I think that in order to work, this will need to be strictly focussed on said creative aspects (e.g. original content, use of scripting or artistic ideas; execution will probably fit into this to some degree) rather than a judge's entire opinion of an entry; that's what the community voting is for, after all. I would suggest 15 points for a 'neutral' entry with little OC or ideas but no obvious failings, which judges can scale up to as much as 30 based on individual discretions. Subtractions may be made for unoriginal or failed content, but the point here is to give credit.
-40 points based on community voting. I am not a fan of the idea of running this as a basic poll, on the basis that there's zero reason not to vote for some of these aside from trying to pick a winner. Single choice would be even worse due to all the credit it leaves out. Therefore, I will advocate a post-vote system. Here's the layout I've come up with:

1. First place vote (40 points)
2. Second place (34? points)
3. Third place (29? points)
Hon. mentions: As many other games as a person desires can be placed here, for 20 points each.

Like the creativity judging, the community score will be the total average of all votes. The gaps are fairly large because I figure it's important that this be competitive. It's still better than all-or-nothing votes. Also voters will have had to play all the entries to be eligible, naturally
It is still undecided who will sit on the mysterious judging panel. But for now, everyone should play the mods, and perhaps share what they think if they haven't already.

I could judge. I've already played most of the entries, and I have semi-detailed notes on each of my playthroughs.

After careful deliberation DT and I have decided to have a small panel of judges, that will consist of Polaris, Dunc, and ThatNamelessGuy. You guys can communicate amongst yourselves however you wish. PM, IM, whatever.

In the meantime, everyone else can start posting their votes!
Simply make a post ranking the mods, and we'll tabulate the rest. You need to do at least the top 3, although you can rank more if you wish for hon. mentions etc

Yes, hon mentions are ideally for everything else someone likes or wants to give credit to. If someone wants to vote for all eight entries they can go ahead! :orangebell: Anyway I still have some of these I need to play so I'ma get onto that.

I think if you participated there should be a rule that you can't vote for your own mod?

By "uh" I think Aar means that this exists. I'm not sure if PolarStar used it, but it's pretty likely. I can understand why you might not notice that, though, not many mods I've played actually use it.

The order only matters for the top three, I mean I guess you can order them all if you want but the rest will be HMs.

I think they/we should be able to, to keep things consistent. Maybe not give it top billing?

It just seems like a conflict of interest to me no matter where you put it, unless it's excluded outright.

I find it rather curious this was decided by "DT and you", given that you both have entries in the contest, so you two hand picking the judges is kind of a conflict of interest??

Maybe. But it's not like we conspired our choices for some kind of illuminati scheme.
I have a transcription of the discussion.
(6:49:32 PM) Noxid: hi DT
(6:50:56 PM) Doub le Think: Hola
(6:51:08 PM) Noxid: I guess it's up to us to pick who should judge the contest
(6:51:39 PM) Doub le Think: Oh okay :v:
(6:51:53 PM) CptFabulous: pick me, I have been a highly involved community member for like
(6:51:57 PM) CptFabulous: holy fuck almost 6 years now
(6:52:02 PM) Noxid: lol
(6:52:43 PM) Doub le Think: What was that thing Aar submitted?
(6:53:01 PM) Noxid: people that have offered to so far are uh... GIR, Polaris, TPCool, and namelesss
(6:53:12 PM) Noxid: idk but I couldn't download it so I didnt include it
(6:53:19 PM) Noxid: p sure it was a joke submit anyway
(6:53:21 PM) Doub le Think: I shall ask around
(6:53:30 PM) Doub le Think: So what B-bot's
(6:53:33 PM) Doub le Think: *was
(6:53:34 PM) bobbyis: I can judge
(6:53:43 PM) bobbyis: I haven't played any of them so I'm a fair and unbiased judge
(6:53:59 PM) Noxid: well blonic's was downloadable at least
(6:55:29 PM) Doub le Think: [8:54:28 AM] Aar: It's Start Point without a door
[8:54:47 AM] Habbiz [Everything Is Alright]: I see
(6:55:38 PM) Noxid: other candy-dates include dunc and hayden I think
(6:56:42 PM) Doub le Think: I don't know how many there need to be
(6:56:56 PM) Noxid: well uhh
(6:57:04 PM) Doub le Think: Maybe 3-5?
(6:57:08 PM) Noxid: lemme check what criterion they were judging on
(6:57:12 PM) Noxid: I was thinking 3 would suffice
(7:00:18 PM) Noxid: yeah I think 3 would be alright
(7:00:24 PM) Doub le Think: It would be good to have positivity and variety
(7:02:20 PM) Noxid: yeah
(7:02:46 PM) Doub le Think: Polaris, Dunc and Nameless maybe?
(7:03:41 PM) Doub le Think: JJ/Solaris was also suggested
(7:03:49 PM) Noxid: lol
(7:03:51 PM) Noxid: umm
(7:03:59 PM) Noxid: well it was his contest
(7:04:06 PM) Noxid: but are they going to be available
(7:04:09 PM) Doub le Think: Yeah that's what I'm thinking
(7:04:45 PM) Doub le Think: Plus then we could have Polaris, Solaris and uhhhhh
(7:04:57 PM) Noxid: lunaris
(7:05:02 PM) Noxid: or ludacris, if he is willing
(7:05:33 PM) CptFabulous: "yo luda, check out these dope mods"
(7:05:34 PM) Doub le Think: Liraxus?
(7:06:33 PM) Doub le Think: ristos :v:
(7:06:40 PM) Noxid: :p
(7:08:19 PM) Noxid: I think polaris, nameless and dunc would be an ok mix
if nameless isn't overly confident about it then my substitute would be TPCool
(7:08:38 PM) Doub le Think: Sounds good
(7:08:59 PM) Doub le Think: Apparently we had a spambot at some point called "Ellingham in Paris Valorie"
(7:09:10 PM) Noxid: fancy
(7:09:12 PM) CptFabulous: I say
(7:11:22 PM) Doub le Think: hmm
(7:11:26 PM) Doub le Think: Nameless does say he doesn't know modding
(7:11:39 PM) Noxid: thatnamelessguy: input pls
(7:12:05 PM) Doub le Think: Which is somewhat important to understanding how scripting effects work
(7:12:29 PM) Doub le Think: And the difference between hacks and TSC
(7:13:05 PM) Noxid: it could be useful to have "the outside eye" though
(7:13:22 PM) Noxid: to see things from a more objective POV
(7:13:50 PM) Doub le Think: "What is this sorcery"
(7:14:37 PM) Doub le Think: I do want to check how Safu did that opening effect though
(7:14:59 PM) Noxid: oh yeah that was neat
(7:15:03 PM) Doub le Think: I assume some sort of rotating enemy but got damn it looks amazing
(7:15:10 PM) Doub le Think: *orbiting
(7:15:31 PM) Noxid: I thought maybe Red Crystal, but stacked a whole lot
(7:15:41 PM) Noxid: and with some various timings to the animation
(7:16:08 PM) Doub le Think: Yeah, delayed <ANP's
(7:16:29 PM) Doub le Think: They're too close to be map slots
(7:16:54 PM) Noxid: yeah there's no way you could animate that with tiles
(7:16:58 PM) Noxid: it's really limited
(7:22:51 PM) Doub le Think: Okay so uhhhhh
(7:23:58 PM) thatnamelessguy: i am here
i don't really know much about modding, i know fairly basic stuff, and i can tell what's technically impressive and stuff within limitations, but i think i know enough to judge
(7:24:36 PM) Doub le Think: Sounds delightfully adequate
(7:25:24 PM) Doub le Think: Maybe you three and JJ can check his privilege and add himself if he wants
(7:25:40 PM) Noxid: sounds good to me
Unfortunately Ludacris could not be reached for inquiry.

My site's down, sorry about that.
My entry was essentially Start Point without a door.

Okay, here we go:

Story: by Noxid

Well, this was interesting, to bad it was incomplete, at the time of this post, but I did enjoy it. (except the start was slow, but it was better than Cave) I can't wait for it to be finished.
The second time around reminded me a lot of the "ashes of the forgotten mimiga"
I can't really say much more for it, it was definitely interesting but I just can't put it in words, except the dialogue on the third run, was that a literal TL of the original Japanese?

Don't let go: by DT

Classic and very very humerous. I loved it a LOT, I couldn't stop laughing :p

great job DT I loved it, this made my day.

Paws: by Doors

Good art, interesting characters, but that's about it. I couldn't bring myself to beat because talking to a lot of characters over and over isn't my favorite thing to do, though I will say the art is good. :)

DELETE: by さふさか (safusaka)

Wow, just wow, I the titel screen/ intro looks absolutely amazing, I love it, and the levels, I don't know how much art you ripped from other games, but it look amazing and the weapons, wow they are OP and great.

I didn't beat it (I gave up in the waterworks) but it's just amazing to me, really, really well done except the physics, I kept sliding and hot being able to land on the platforms, but other then that, it's awesome so far. and the music is good as well. great job.

okay no, I can't go any further, this is going to be bad, very bad.

I don't need invisible nsfw thanks, or booties.

The other mods I can't download because meadiafire is evil. I /really want to play "snow"

*sniff*
