I really, REALLY think Pixel is making a new game

Ah, I've got versions 0.0010, 0.0020, and 0.0030 now.
Guess this won't be like the Cave Story-forever-unreleased-Beta.
But, there's not a lot of things to be saving, either

I am. It's interesting to see the progress... I'm very curious as to where he's actually going with this, so far everything I've guessed seems less and less likely.

Indeed. I guess it's a hobby that he can't really drop, which is good for us of course.

If I ever work on a game in the future, I hope you will play it as well.

were I ever to make another game, I would hope that I'd be more earnest with the construction of things like the map editor and the various specialized data-management tools.

Sounds more like he's done with large games, and will only be doing smaller games (maybe around ikachan size?) from now on. So, no second cave story-esque game.

If you've checked the Nicalis forums, he even talked about the current RPG he's working on. {Although it frustrates him with it's progress}
It's one of the games he talked about including an editor and such for.

I know about the RPG, but... I thought it wasn't going to be that large. More than one of the more minigame-esque games, but less than cave story (Ikachan-sized?). But I don't know that much about it, being unreleased and all.

I guess that's the only way to interpret it. Abandoning work on a game is never good. Unless it's a really bad game, but Pixel doesn't make bad games, so that doesn't apply.

Didn't he give all of the Nicalis people copies of the CS Beta and let them mess around with it? I know I saw that somewhere.

Now that CS is done, they might be fiddling with that old engine.

 

I recall a quote from tyrone on his forums saying he never had his own copy of the beta, but only got a chance to play it on a personal visit to Mr. Amaya's house. And, if Tyrone didn't get one, I doubt that anybody else did.

Tyrone said a few things regarding the Cave Story beta on the old Nicalis forums:

I’ve had a chance to play the different versions of the beta. It’s quite a different game than the one we’re used to playing.

Amaya and I will be discussing that and a few other things on the blog post-release. We also have some neat “behind-the-scenes” artwork that we’ll eventually show.

Yes, behind-the-scenes stuff like original artwork etc, but as I mentioned it won’t be for a while as I want to make sure we don’t ruin anything for new and old players.
There will be some things in the Wii version that you hardcore CS fans will notice.
About the beta, I actually played it during one of my visits with Amaya. So, no, I don’t actually have the beta. But I’d love to find a way to have people see it.
