Sadly, no matter how much better anything is than Skype it will always have one downfall: very few people use it. So you can call very few people. It would require a mass migration of people from Skype to certain other video chatting program.
This mentality is the reason why people still use Skype. So start avoiding Skype like the plague and get your friends, family and relatives to start using something better! (Assuming they aren't using Facebook Messenger, then it'll be impossible to make them use something else)

yeah that's a good one too. Seems pretty popular with the gaming crowd. I used it once and didn't have any problems.

+1 to discord; I've been using it for months, and had no issues.

I'm still using Skype, it has a web version too now. Also, Slack is good for text chat.

I never use Skype. I guess I'll have to download your NSA Pidgin program then.

ironically, Pidgin is one of those freetard-approved applications so it's the least likely of any to be backdoored I think
it's also why it's shitty but hey give and take

Hey jethawk :)
Try using "discord", its primarily focused on servers like team speak or ventrilo but it's a free program.

Plus, many people from the General Skype Group have converged to Discord, so you'd find more conversation there anyway.
tl;dr: discord is an infinitely better skype and you should use it

hi so I guess this is a bit of a bump and perhaps unneeded but I thought I might share. behold-
https://telegram.org/
Telegram is kind of cool in my opinion. I don't obviously know all of the important tech stuff behind it but in my simple simple mind it's kind of like skype, but not shit, and also with a plethora of stickers.
Plus you can like have interaction between mobile and desktop which I think is cool.
In all everyone has their own tastes. I just thought I'd share this kind of simple and new service to those interested.

Really not a big fan of telegram tbh. Maybe it's the plausible connotations of it being a Russian intelligence front. Maybe it's the fact that's it's demonstrably insecure. Maybe it's the fact it uses my mobile phone as an account number. But there's enough things about it that set me on edge to put me off ever using it seriously.
