God this program is such a gob full of shit, I didn't like it when it was good and it's only gone downhill since. Adding advertisements, bloat, chewing up my CPU, and worst of all, replacing my :3 with a fuckin picture of a cat
And now, I find out that when I go to look for a 3rd party skype-compatible client they apparently axed the API support just a few months ago. Goddamn anticompetitive bastards.

ITT: Discuss skype alternatives and otherwise shit on skype. Anything less than impotent, powerless rage will be frowned upon.

Some alt IM/VOIP clients I've come across so far:
http://line.me/en/ < idk, someone recommended it to me
http://www.icq.com/en < Older than the internet
https://www.tox.im/en < hacker nerd paranoia client
http://www.razerzone.com/ca-en/comms < 4 REAL GAMER GURLS ONLY

What about teamspeak?

Sure a server might be pricey, but in the end, it might be worth it.

BTW, how do I join the Tribute Site skype group?

nO THAT DOESNT FIX IT
because then everyone else is going to see that stupid garbage and I won't even know what I'm sending them

case: I used to use :] as opposed to :) because less "auto-emoticon" bullshit picked up on it. But then skype changed :] to "blush smily w/ hearts" (what the fuck). It took someone whom I had no intention of ever sending hearts to pointing that out to make me realize the gravity of my mistake.

That's the problem with anything
Someone had to start moving from MSN or AIM to Skype, and now someone has to start the next migration
I left FA because it was trash and I'll leave Skype too. Be the change you want to see.

I'm hardly on Skype on a very consistent basis, anyway, but if everyone (and I do mean /everyone/) packs up and goes to a new, better thing, I'll hop along with them. If there's even a single person I know that can only be contacted at Skype, I'll keep it for that.

The big question is whether this new whatever has an app, though. Otherwise, you're definitely not going to be seeing me there, for obvious reasons. I can get used to anything, so whatever everyone picks is okay with me.

And you don't have to drop it cold turkey, either. If you really need to keep Skype for someone stubborn, go ahead. I used IRC, MSN, AIM and Skype all at once at some point.
But don't stop fighting the good fight.

If "fighting the good fight" means passively accepting what others decide, then yeah! I won't give up. ^_^;

Honestly, I'm still not a big fan of Skype. But this is better than trying to add you guys on Facebook and start a group conversation there.

I really do hate where Skype is headed. I was successfully able to block all the ads, though.

hey dude, what's up

I used to use Trillian Pro for all of my communication needs, and I still feel it's worth mentioning, but it sounds like you're looking for a simple, elegant, free solution with emote control. I am trying to look around, but there's so much mess out there...
Well...I don't know the latest and greatest but:

http://www.sultansolutions.com/trillian-vs-pidgin/ (some outdated info, but a good article)
http://www.wikivs.com/wiki/Pidgin_vs_Trillian

These two classics are worth at least knowing about with how they support and centralize so many different messengers and plugins.

(Not to mention it sounds like Pidgin has working plugins for skype, steam, etc... And, maybe with a little scripted word replacer + filter you could have emotes automatically convert to something appropriate depending on the medium you are chatting. As for the resource usage... I am not sure how they handle.)

EDIT: Noxid's right, pidgin does not support skype anymore. Due to being misread on my part~

nah, there's no way pidgin or trillian could support skype - Microsoft killed the API, there's no legal way for them to possibly support it. And even if it were hacked together, it wouldn't be easy so nobody is going to ever bother.

I only use Skype because, well, everyone uses it. Plus, it's...kind of easy to use, in terms of interface design.

BUT

THIS IS NOT A GOOD INTERFACE CHANGE.

Also I've used Trillian once. I didn't really like how it was set up, in comparison to Skype, but hey, I'm where most of my acquaintanced friends are, so I'll go wherever.
