I put torches fucking everywhere, but mobs still spawn on me.

Make sure your bed isn't next to a wall.

How would you guys feel about a new map? I don't know how much work you got done on this one, but I do know of a super-neat seed that would be a lot of fun to colonize. Would you guys be okay with losing your progress or do we already have both feet in?

Well, I kinda lost all my stuff in the mineshaft so I dunno. I built a couple things but I was only on it for two days, so MAYBE.

I built a castle, a stone bridge, and was colonizing an island. Noxid's Cave was still the creation that had the most work put into it, though.

Yeah, why not. When will we be able to play again?

To me, a map is just a map; it's what you make of it that's important.
(that, and the fact that I spend 90% of my playtime underground)

I was looking forward to finishing my cavern...

Well this will undoubtedly change the map generator, since snow biomes are back. So much for that cool new map I was talking about.

I'm going to reformat the hard drive this weekend, and if everything goes smoothly we'll be playing Minecraft next week. Of course, I have no reason to believe that things will go smoothly on a five-year-old machine.
I also found a new seed that I like, so get ready for a new map because 1.8 doesn't have snow biomes.
And trust me, you want snow biomes now.

Try the seed "suave baby" - total survival map. Hard as hell.
