Nope, but I never noticed that. It's actually what 2 quotes mean together, but it could be a mistranslation as well. But your perseverance, courage and chivalry earns you the answer .

My interpretation :

Which is the very reason he came with them to the island. He knew about the Crown and its power. But, not where to find it...

So the Doctor had to stick with the group of scientists as they uncovered the secrets of the island. He had to do his job, all the while going behind their backs to observe their progress...
At last, the day came when one of the scientists uncover what he had been looking for, allowing him to leave the group and gain the crown...

There's also the huge possibility that I'm just missing what you are trying to say entirely I blame it on many days of sleep deprevation

The key words would be,
"which is why he wormed his way into our group in the first place."

Meaning it was the reason he originally sought them out to join. Since that sentence means "the reason for originally joining [the group]", that would be providing a reason for the first time he joined their expedition, rather than stating another joining of the group.

Let me rearrange some of the sentences in the letter without changing any words :

I think what that sentence was referring to was the time before they left for the island where the doctor wasn't part of the original expedition but worked his way into the group for the chance to get a hold of the crown.

I don't see where it says he was their friend. It also says he has known about the crown all along.
It only specifies that the Doctor joined their group once: to go with them on the research trip to the island.

The Doctor's job was as a medical doctor [probably]. He did his job until he found the Crown.

I think I mentioned that in the movie script thread somewhere. Sticking to the tradition, andwhy was the one I was arguing with .

 

Sue escaping and then being taken again makes more sense really.

I'm loving Utawarerumono so far~
I actually contributed to the translation of that project by being one of the image editors..!

The only complaint I have so far, is there are no voices in the PC version
Whereas the PS2 version has voices... I wonder if I could convince some people to do the voices..
