Cave Story: The Prequel, The Remake, and The Sequel.

This wouldn't really be a mod since I will be making a custom engine for it, but since there is no "Custom engine Cave Story game" section I'm posting it here. haha

Anyway, I'm making this thread mostly because I need a thinktank to come up with ideas for both the prequel and sequel, the remake part of it will be just that the Cave Story we all know and love with some extras in it and slightly better graphics.

I have some ideas for the prequel and the sequel but I need alot more for them to be real games, I already know that the prequel will be about when Quote and Curly first came to the island and defeated one of the crown bearers (I can't remember his name at this moment of time in space and I do not feel like looking it up.), the problem I am having is filling in the space between when Quote and Curly land on the island and they defeat the crown bearer without ripping off a bunch of stuff from Cave Story, which I don't want to do.

And the problem I am having with the sequel is I can't come up with a single idea besides having Quote, Curly, and Barlog return without completely ripping off Jenka's Nightmare. <_<

So yeah, I need some fresh minds to come up with some new ideas, you can pretty much suggest anything you want for the prequel, remake, or sequel as long as you keep in mind I want to put both Quote and Curly (and maybe some other characters) in the prequel and sequel.

 

I'm making some similar mods my self so I could help with a few ideas.

Just hope this semi-game doesn't go the way 90% of the mods/hacks here have.

Looking forward to it. I suggest you do at least a demo the remake first so we know how your engine is before the actual prequel/sequel. (no offence, but I just don't think a remake can give the same feel as the game itself and might get boring after a while, so I'll be treating it sort of like a demo of your triple project).

The X-factor in CS was the storyline and primarily the way it was unveiled slowly. A prequel would need a lot more thinking done into it than you think IMO because there needs to be something really major (in terms of plot-wise importance) that we don't know already.

Honestly, it'd really suck if it all takes place on the island which we've played through 6796896879+ times already. Gameplay variety and originality is very important.

Personally, I'd prefer it if you came here with something more "concrete" than an idea (something like a demo or a few screenshots of the engine in action). Don't get me wrong, its just that I've seen too many people come here with all the ideas in the world, then fail to follow through with them.

To be honest, I think you are biting off way more than you can chew. (I mean, a prequel and a sequel, as well as a remake. Thats three games unto itself!) You should concentrate on doing the remake first, and getting the game engine finished, since there isn't going to be any prequels or sequels if don't have an engine to put it on.

Speaking of which, how far are you with that engine?

And what is it like? Are you going to make it 2d or 3d? Are you going to keep it true to the original (gameplay-wise I mean), or are you going somewhere else with this? I would really like to know.

Not really, I've made a few games before that took at least 20 hours to beat, and this project won't come close to that.

I already have a game engine I use so all I have to do is make a few changes to it first.

I could make it in 3d but that would take alot longer than I am planing on putting into this project.

I was already planning on making the prequel longer than the other two parts of the game which a bunch of different backstories like the story of Ballos before the island. But the main characters would still be Quote and Curly.

Fair enough. Its just the way you put it in your first post made it sound like you were making an engine from scratch. That said, I'm still a little skeptical about the fact that you plan to make both a prequel AND a sequel. But if you say you can pull it off...

Also, I didn't ask for the game to be made in 3d, (although that would be cool ) I was asking what the engine would look like, and what you plan on doing with it. I would like to know.

And on an unrelated note, could you give me a link to some of those games you said you've made. I'm always looking for more stuff to play.

Oh and just do a sequel and prequel, ditch or refuse to release the remake. Some people consider cave story to be perfect as is and they may take it negatively. Purists + Those who want a remake = Flamewar.

I didn't say yes or no to the idea, what you did was give me anything idea of something to add to the prequel since I've planned for that to be the biggest of the three and to have it to explain alot of things, like, the origins of the Mimigas.

Well Jenka's Nightmare is the best thing to a sequel out there, and Shmitz best you to the punch.

Hmm... Interesting concept you're willing to attempt to create, MetaSeraphim. (that, and I think this post needs more attention!)

Like many have said before, try to concentrate on one area rather than work on all three at once, though I'm sure you've though of that more than once.

As for ideas, here are my thoughts (boy that doesn't look grammatically correct):

Prequel:
We all know that Quote and Curly are robots sent to defeat the previous Crown bearer. Of course, they fail in doing so, at least completely. From what I can remember, Arthur was successful in bringing him down, because the bearer was weakened by the two robots. (that explains why he couldn't survive the Doctor's attacks) You could possibly make the two robots have prior encounters with Arthur, and expand from there.

Another anomaly was why Booster flinched at the first sight of Quote. Maybe Professor Booster had a run in with him before, or other "surface" robots.

Also, how far back in time do you want to go, MetaSeraphim? I still like the idea of the Red Flower wars. If it's that far back, it sorta makes sense that Quote and Curly could be in it, as both have had numerous amnesia moments, possibly indicating that age has had an effect on the two, and it takes a LONG time for some machines to wear down. (this could explain Quote's inability to keep energy in his weapons every time he gets hit; he's just too old of a boy robot!)

And does the game have to take place on the Island? I'd rather see the prequel somewhere else, maybe on the ground below the island?

There are other questions to be answered from Cave Story, but these are the more important ones in my opinion.

Remake:
You're on your own there!

Sequel:
I only got one idea. I believe that every time a new Crown bearer has been chosen, nations from all over the world go crazy over it and invade the island. I have no clue as to whether it only happened with the last Crown bearer mentioned in Cave Story, but then again, we don't know WHO the previous bearer was... (could be any of the previous three)

In that sense, maybe yet another invasion was about to start as we see the heroes trying flying off. Invasion teams see them as a threat, and shoots them down. Balrog, Curly and Quote get separated from the attack. Quote loses all weapons during the freefall. Curly loses memory. AGAIN.

Although the crown is destroyed, possibly permanently this time, I noticed that the Red Gem that the Doctor has created just floated away after the Undead Core battle. That's some powerful stuff there, and the Doctor may have created more than just one.

Of course, none of the above still doesn't explain why the island is still floating... (sorry, but Jenka's Nightmare basically beats my theory...)
