Mojang is being bought by Microsoft next week. Is it the end of Minecraft as we know it?

Why would this be the end of minecraft.

If they're buying Mojang obviously they're going to keep updating it.

Except that raises further questions such as "why is microsoft buying mojang" I mean shit what could they possibly gain from it? The game is past its prime, and while it's still worth a lot, why do they think they'll make back the rumored 2 billion (again, RUMORED) dollars they're offering?

This offer would've made sense 5 years ago.

Because they will take it off of iOS and Playstation and Android. It's just a move by Microsoft to increased sales for Windows Phone and XBox One (because i am 100% sure that it will be on the Windows Phone store some time soon. Also, it isn't rumored, Notch posted it on his Twitter recently.

Everyone under 10 seems to think this is the end of the world and I have no idea why.
I mean as long as they don't tamper with my ultra hot PC version then I'm fine.

I actually just started playing Minecraft recently, I'm really not sure what to think considering all the bad side effects it gave me.

 

Well, now it's official. Mojang was bought by Microsoft officially. Hopefully they will just not mess up PC because that's the only one I even play now. I am 100% certain! though that this is just market strategy: they put it on the Windows App Store with features other platforms don't have. Works like magic. Now everyone will walk around with a Surface RT and a Windows Phone with Minecraft installed on it.

A video game, even if it is (or more precisely "was") a cult classic hit, isn't going to raise their lukewarm phone sales.

I mean saying "cult classic" was an acknowledged understatement, as I knew it was still going strong to this day, higher than what it was when I was into it (hosting a private server and what not... man those were the good days), but it reached 50 more million sale milestones since?!?

I was wondering why this deal seemed ludicrous. Statement retracted.

I'm not going to ask what apparently makes Minecraft more terrible now than it was before, because I'll probably get a somewhat reasonable but cynical answer that I don't understand...but regarding Microsoft I don't see what the issue is. Even if you dislike new updates to the game, you can just not update. For the PC version, anyway. If they do pull the other ports, which honestly has a good chance of happening, then I can see why some people would be a little miffed if they happen to primarily play that version or wanted to. (Then again, it's not like being removed from the stores will stop some people.)

To be honest, I don't see this affecting too much. People tend to overreact to such news a little bit. -w-

It's a pretty good business move from Notch, imho. At this point the guy has practically all the money he'll ever need in his life, dumping MC would take a lot of pressure off his back from the press and he got even more money for it($2.5 billion).

 

He hasn't been involved with Minecraft for a while now, anyway. Leaving Mojang just means less pressure and responsibility for things he isn't affecting, I think.

At any rate, now he'll be free to work on more important things! Like Cliffhorse.
