  • So I might have just listened to Arctic Winds 540237 times today. It's a great piece in so many ways: melodically, harmonically, rhythmically, structurally, etc. And it grooves, too. Again, kudos!
    You are good at music, would you please give me your opinion on the following? I'm 27 with former experience of playing the synth at -I guess- intermediate level. I'm said to have no talent for singing if that counts. My question is: with effort if I'd learn music theory (and other stuff you'd recommend) 2 hours/day very seriously would I be able to compose songs and after approximately how many years of practice?     Studying music theory would help you understand the "language" of music (i.e. what are intervals, what are scales, what are triads, what are augmented sixth chords, etc). It would probably take about a year to develop a solid useful understanding of these concepts if you started from no knowledge at all, studying 2 hrs/day. However, if you already play an instrument and know how to read music, that's a decent chunk of knowledge already.

    In addition to learning theory, I would strongly recommend taking pieces you like and picking them apart to see exactly what it is you like about them. This would mean you'd either need to have a very good ear, or have these pieces in some sort of medium where you can look at each note individually (either in the form of sheet music or some sort of sequenced digital format such as midi, organya, or pxtone). imslp.org is a good website to find free sheet music of classical music. More recent music is harder to find sheet music for, as it's copyrighted, and also some jazz and pop music is largely improvised and large parts of it may not even exist in written form. If there's a piece you'd really like sheet music for but can't find, I could have a go at transcribing it.

    Well, it's certainly very interesting - makes me curious where it's going. It flows reasonably well, and I think what you have so far is a bit too short for "consistency of narration" or lack thereof to be readily apparent.

    As for where to go next, I don't really know what you have planned, if anything. I guess, for starters, explain why/how he had her killed. Also, you might want to mention where they were before he moved to Phoenix, to give some sort of frame of reference, so we know how drastic of a move it was (Beijing to Phoenix > Santa Fe to Phoenix).

    Also I was wondering, as the sonata-allegro form is a sort of incomplete alchemical process, whether you could make a musical form which was a complete one. Hmm

    I'm not totally sure about this, but I think Beethoven did something kind of like that in some of his later works by appending a long coda (ending section) to the end of a typical sonata-allegro form which was sort of a "blossoming out" of previous musical material a la red alchemal phase. Though of course, it's entirely plausible that this is completely wrong and I'm just trying to hard to make my theory work. I'll have to do some more research.

    Also, don't expect too much from me teaching-wise for the next 5-ish weeks, during which my life is going to consist almost exclusively of eating, sleeping, going to class, studying, programming, composing, performing, and practicing (mostly that last one).

    I'm now going to do what I didn't do before and prove that these two filters are in fact complimentary. However, in order for it to work right, I have to split the first line of the highpass into two lines:

    output+=input-prevInput;
    output-=2*Math.PI*cutoffFreq*output/samplingRate;

    At first glance, this may appear to be equivalent to the earlier version, but notice that, now, once the 2nd line of code is reached, the value of output has changed by input-prevInput. I'm allowed to make this change because, as delta_t approaches zero, the two versions converge on being equivalent (and in practice delta_t is very small).

    This change is equivalent to leaving the 1st line as 1 line, but replacing the 2nd "output" with "(output+input-prevInput)".

    So, we're going to prove the complimentariness of the filters inductively.

    We want to prove that, at every sample frame, the sum of the two outputs is the input. We'll assume both outputs and the input start at zero (and hence prevInput starts at zero).

    For the sake of brevity, I will replace 2*Math.PI*cutoffFreq/samplingRate with k for now.

    output_LP=prevOutput_LP+(input-prevOutput_LP)*k
    output_HP=prevOutput_HP+input-prevInput-k*(prevOutput_HP+input-prevInput)

    We want to prove that, if the above 3 statements are true, then output_LP+output_HP=prevInput

    First, factor a prevout+in-previn out of the HP equation:
    output_HP=(prevOutput_HP+input-prevInput)*(1-k)

    Notice that prevoutHP-previn=-prevoutLP, so we can rewrite the above as:
    output_HP=(input-prevOutputLP)*(1-k)
    output_HP=input*(1-k)-prevOutputLP*(1-k)

    Next, rewrite the LP equation like so:

    I'm about to go write a Java app so you can actually HEAR what these filters sound like, rather than just looking at it from a theoretical standpoint, but first there's one more thing I'd like to point out.

    Notice what happens when k is equal to 1. Our Java code simplifies down to the following:

    //lowpass
    output+=(input-output);

    //highpass
    output+=input-prevInput;
    output-=output;
    prevInput=input;

    which simplifies further to:

    //lowpass
    output=input;

    //highpass
    output=0;

    This means that, in practice, if cutoffFreq*2*pi is equal to the sampling rate, the lowpass filter does absolutely no filtering, allowing the input to pass through unmodified, and the highpass filter does complete filtering, allowing no sound to pass through, even though, in theory, this shouldn't happen. The opposite happens when k=0, though this is "supposed" to happen, both in theory and in practice. Weird stuff happens if k>1, so you should limit the cutoff frequencies of your filters to samplingRate/(2*pi). You may be able to generate cool effects by having the cutoff higher than this, but that would make the the audio output sound drastically different depending on the sampling rate, which is generally considered bad design (it's nice to be able to just adjust the sampling rate willy nilly without odd consequences).
