Using peoples sprites/music whatever...

So... Is it okay to use peoples work and whatnot without asking and crediting?

Always give credit, yes... and if there's a chance you may make money from it, you must ask for permission.

I can't really bump a stickied thread, right?

I agree with the highest majority of votes- Ask & give credit!

(Normally, I wouldn't have said a word here, but this video made me think otherwise... So now people are going to mistake me for Bright Roar, now... That's my loss, I guess...)

I think if something is popular enough, you don't really have to ask.
For example, if every person who made a movie based on mario and used him as a sprite waited for nintendo to respond, then holy shit.
But say If I made a custom sprite for cavestory, and someone wanted to use him as an npc or something like that (I dunno im asshating this) I would like to be asked since, after all, it's my design and I have the right to not let others use it. Since we all know if I made something it wouldn't be hard to ask since my reply would be swift since I got no one askin me.
But if you were askin on somethin that was globally known, then you really don't need to ask.

However, all in all, credit must be given. No matter what. Without giving credit your stating that you created said piece. In doing so your stealing that thing your using, and that is illegal you know.

You're definitely very wrong about that. If anyone made a movie based on mario without permission and tried to sell it, Nintendo would probably sue them. If something is globally known, it's even more important to ask than if it isn't, because it's more likely that you will get in trouble for it.

That said, if it's fair use or non commercial use, it should be okay.

Assuming you don't intend to make a profit from it, and the author has already made it publicly available on the web, that should be a safe path to take. Still, it's risky.

You know, since I have been a spriter for a while, I have always been involved in discussions like this.

I say that they should specify if you can use them, if you must give credit if you are allowed.
