Maybe I should mention WHY some of the games are where they are and why they’re the absolute best.
1. Silent Hill Series: This is just absolutely inarguable. This is by far the scariest series in existence. No exceptions. Disturbing visuals, enemies and atmospheres are only part of what drive each game. The flawless stories are so abyssal and intricately thought out they’ll swallow you and enthrall you endlessly. Aforementioned deformed enemies hide a deep symbolism behind their disfigurement. Hell, they hired writers to help out with the story for every game except the first. But enough fluff, this series really is disturbing on an impossible amount of levels. It’ll trump anything and everything you’ve ever seen. Nothing can surpass it. It is the epitome of horror.
Also: Pyramid Head. You do not fuck with motherfucking Pyramid Head.
5. F.E.A.R.: Its expansion pack “Extraction Point” was the true face of the series when it came to horror. Lot’s of stuff lifted from Silent Hill, actually…
6. Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem: By itself, this game isn’t that scary, however, the insanity effects make the game. I’ll tell you that I definitely wasn’t the only one to break out in a cold sweat as soon as I saw the screen say “Your Memory Card has been deleted” or look upon my screen in utter horror as it suddenly went blank as if it has been turned off just as I was being surrounded by a horde of Lovecraftian undead, among a whole host of other things. A very entertaining game indeed.
8. System Shock 2: Yeah. It’s one of my favorite games of all time. That’s what made Bioshock so good: the nostalgia of it all. Am I still the only one who thinks SHODAN was hot?
9. Doom 3: This game is the God of cheap scares. This is why it made my list. Some of the enemies are kind of creepy, and the creators were definitely masters at building up suspense.
