As much as I really don't like it when people mod mods, that would have to be the most perfect story line ever and I agree that it must be done.

You might have a better chance of requesting permission through legit channels than to removing it if I understand its complexity right.

To paraphrase Boxid, removing the hack would be of greater or equal difficulty to hacking it in in the first place.
So you can't really have wtf story-2xres.

You are better off modding WTF Story version .4, mainly because of how severe the 2x res hack is to the game (which the above two already stated), and that version .4 was the latest version without the hack. If you want to use either the 2x res version or the regular res hack, then you have to ask permission from its authors.

definitely, cave editor and an extremely large resolution and tileset aren't going to work

CAN I GET A DOWNLOAD LINK TO 0.4 SOMEWHERE?
