Yeah I'm not gonna play again, it won't make a difference and my evening was taken up playing for a mini shmup tournament anyway

Got a Jetpack and Shotgun Early on, along with Tier 2 Kali Rewards, then later on got 99 Bombs and Max Tier - whatever it is. Then I went to the City of Gold....and then I beat the game...for the first time.

So, this week.. I thought we could try something different, and revisit an old game with a new twist.

In that zip is a hacked version of Cave Story that keeps track of how many times you've jumped, and a save file that puts you at the start of the Labyrinth. Your goal is to make it to Dark Space (I think that's what it's called.. that little room right before the core area) in as few jumps as possible. I was considering making you do the whole game, but then I decided that would be cruel. Try whatever you want (short of hacking the game or modifying the files of course... yes, I am aware of how easy it is to do), all that matters is getting to that room with your jump counter as low as possible. It even saves in case you need to take a break!
A backup profile is included for restarting if you save, try to keep at least one original on hand to make copies of and you'll make your life a bit easier.

If I could give some basic advice, I advise going for the Booster v0.8. I doubt that getting the v2.0 would be practical for a higher score. I also got the Snake, but I have a feeling the Machine Gun could come in handy if you're really good with it. The save didn't come with it, so I guess if you really wanted the Machine Gun you'd have to just play from the beginning or get another save.
Oh by the way, it's called "Black Space," Noxid. Some Cave Story fan you are!

 

I'm pretty sure he meant "dark place" or something, the place before the battle with the core/the core room, not the undead core.

Can't blame me though, they have similar names and you fight The Core in both spots. I'll post another score in about an hour >_>


Alright just one question. If I wanted to change the profile.dat so I could get the Machine Gun, would that qualify as:

hacking the game or modifying the files of course

? Can I change the profile.dat, or is that considered "modifying the files?"

I think this is an interesting challenge. Still bummed that multiple people came forth at the end of Spelunky with good scores. (At least mine wasn't too awful)
Anyway, I went through and restarted so many times... So many room switches to get health from the Gaudi in Labyrinth H and the main labyrinth part before the clinic. If anything I think messed me up the most, it was failing to make a jump. (I had to restart once because I decided to skip the Booster V0.8 and failed that jump) I was also very stingy with jumps at times. (Like if an enemy could hit Quote up enough to get up the next block)
So uh, anywho; score here. (It's decent, didn't put a lot of time into it.)

I intentionally made a profile w/o the machine gun because then you'd need like, 0 jumps ever.

Wasn't TOO bad. Very much tried doing most of the required possible jumps you could do once you had the Booster 0.8.

 

how the hell do you get 95 I had half that in the first room

 

I have 27 in the first room and I think I screwed up a couple times
