No, forcing people to strictly adhere to a thread's topic will stifle discussion. Splitting threads up causes them to lose momentum. More moderation doesn't mean better moderation.

Staff should behave differently - they need to set a good example for other members.

No, they should behave like regular people because that's what they are. Demanding that they be paragons of virtue is ridiculous, because they want to be part of the community as much as anyone else does. They have their responsibilities, and we trust them to not abuse their power, but when they're not doing their jobs they're just acting like normal people.

The topic of the forum is "Cave Story", Satellite Lounge is for offtopic discussion. Threads also have specific topics.

That is offtopic discussion. It is allowed. If it goes too far then we split it into its own thread. If not then it is fine.

So you... adapt to the expectations of society? If you can't handle that within a very small scale community (here), I'm not sure you're going to be able to fit in anywhere else. You're never going to find a perfect niche that completely agrees with everything you say or do, because no two people are the same.

 

I don't actually find it hostile, it seems more like an echo chamber. So for someone that doesn't just go along with that, it doesn't seem "friendly".

Anyways, he stated that he doesn't know the difference between love and friendship, not that he doesn't understand friendship. To rephrase it, he bundles love and friendship under one category.

Utopia is a very flawed concept, so is fully pleasing everyone. But you should be able to please everyone to an extent in a small community.

But to be exact, it isn't that Utopias are flawed, or that the execution is necessarily flawed (though it could be), but humans in essence are themselves flawed to be able to conform to something like that.
Just like socialism, there's probably an extra-terrestrial society thriving in a Utopia.

having friends online is somewhat confusing at times, I've kind of learned to just perform the expected conduct around here and most people are friendly to me.

I just act as myself, which frankly for the most part happens to be being friendly. Nevertheless, I do still have a benign dark side, something new from recent times. I'm not sure if it even counts as dark, it's more like a neutral gray area.

If you don't think the suggestion is reasonable, then just don't do it. This isn't a difficult concept to understand. The point of it being a suggestion is that you don't have to do it if you don't want to. If you take offense to someone "suggesting" you do something, then I seriously suggest you rethink what a suggestion means to you.

And suggesting you make your own game engine since you're going to so much effort with all your hacks seems pretty on topic to the "Programming General" thread to me, since it's about Programming in general. Or is making a game engine not programming?

Making a game engine requires a lot of consideration, it isn't just about programming. I want to make a game engine, but I wanted it to be a surprise.

Yeah, basically. I don't get much enjoyment from life, so it was a big thing for me. The only thing I wrote for it so far is a TSC decoder in Java, so it's still early days.

This is pretty much an sort of personal attack, and it wasn't much of an suggestion, but more like calling him crazy or something.

An admin shouldn't be demoted because just one user is just warned for some things. Unless it wasn't justified.

 

It seems like you're saying that if someone is wrong, people are justified in being aggressive towards them. That is extremely wrong, and suggests that being part of this community has made you a worse person.

I'm not saying if someone is wrong some aggression is justified, but if someone is being overly harsh towards another user or just not being very mature in general. I'm not saying that if someone disagrees with someone that they should be aggressive towards that person. I'm suggesting that the only time people on this community were aggressive towards me was when I was being mean or disrespectful to other users or not handling critisism well.
