The beta player is on the tribute site.

Did they ever translate the beta songs on the player? I have an old one that's still in Japanese, thought I'd ask before I bother to DL it again.

Also, I feel strongly that something with the name 'Wind Fortress' would have used the tileset/area graphics of the Balcony, like, an area on TOP of the island. Moonsong's been around since the beta, it's one of the oldest tracks that ended up being uses, so I'd like to think he had the idea for Outer Wall since then, for whatever reason.

I do think more outside areas like that would have ruled, but too much of them and the name "Cave Story" wouldn't have made much sense..

I think there's a translation patch on the site or on these forums.

Most well written? Probably the final battle music.

Most catchy and stuck in my head all day with serious awesomeness? Plantation.

I keep coming back in this thread and changing my mind, but at the moment I feel like Geothermal is the most powerful and well written song.

Moon Song is really great and relaxing, the CS title/Plantation theme is catchy as hell, and the final boss theme is really good too. I also like Running Hell but it might be that I spent so much time there the song is kind of engrained in my brain.

I have to say that my favorite over all is Moonsong. Its a 5-way tie between Mischevious Robot, Hero's End, Last Battle, Scorching back, and Running Hell for second.
There are several others that are quite impressive, like Pulse, as you said. The only reason I don't think they are the "best" is because they are quite simple and wouldn't have taken nearly as much work as the others. They are still great, though.
Personally, I think that the music of the game is the greatest work of art, not the game play or story.

Running Hell is awesome.
my top many(cant really call it a top 5 when you have 3 different ties, can you?):
5: Run!
4: Meltdown 2
3: Geothermal/Oppression/Hero's End three way tie.
2: Plantation/Mischevious Robot/Scorching Back
1.5: White/Balcony/Moonsong/Breakdown fourway.
1: Running Hell by far.

If we're counting beta songs, Wind Fortress is my new #1.

White, Toroko's Theme, Eyes of Flame, Oppression, Wind/Ice Fortress (Beta), Last Battle and Running Hell are my favorites. Moonsong, Gestation and Meltdown 2 come second.

I see no one really like Gravity on here?
Well, it happens to be one of my favourites, that's along with Opression, Eyes of Flame, Last Battle, Run! and even Charge is quite cool, too.
Just noticed that these are all the Boss musics...
