I always imagined ma pignon didn't have a gender, since it's a mushroom. A talking mushroom, but still just a mushroom.
Mmmmm the pignons aren't mushrooms. Reason: the part of a mushroom you see is only its fruiting body. The whole fungus can actually be miles and miles across - it can go under an entire forest, and you might see some fruiting bodies and declare "Oh! What a nice fruiting body!" and sorta think of it as its own thing - but the actual fungus is a giant interconnected "root" system underground. While mushrooms are immediately identifiable, they only just break the surface as to the enormity of the organism itself.
Pignons, as they walk around and are free of any widespread "root" system are thus not part of the main body of a fungus, cannot be a fungus and are not mushrooms. It is also unlikely that they are plants, so we must be forced to consider them animals. Their resemblance to mushrooms is superfical or co-evolutionary and a bit of digging places Pignons in the order Nectridea.

Ridiculousness aside, I do believe that Ma Pignon was intended to be a girl. Perhaps this notion was planted in my brain after playing some mod that had Pa Pignon in it, but her being a mother figure has always popped out as the right of it.

Science science big words. It's a video game. It's a mushroom.

And ma pignon is most likely an it, or a "he", since most people automatically label things of questionable gender a he.

Pignons are based on mushrooms and mushrooms reproduce asexually, therefore we can assume that pignons do as well because it's the simplest explanation.
Can we do something productive now?

And since they do, and they tend to do so on fecal matter, what kind of fecal matter did ma pignon sprout from? Was it of a frenzied mimiga, thus granting it with it's magical powers?

Hmm, so many characters. I would probably say eaither:
Kanpachi,
Cuthulu, or
Chaco.

Kanpachi as one probably because he just walks right on out side in the plantation and goes fishing. Such a pro.
Cuthulu because he/they have so many appearences throughout the game and give you advice. (thinks of mystical demon)
Chaco because she is a different color than the other Mimigas. She's purple while the others are white. Such an important character! Also she can sleep with you lol

This guy knows what's up with Kanpachi. Give him a gold star.

Well, Jack did say there were dangerous mushrooms in the Graveyard.

Many fungi can reproduce sexually, especially in the case of mushrooms.

But you are correct in that they don't actually have a "male" and "female" component of their race.

Anyway, I don't think Ma Pignon is the most important character without a facepic, regardless of whether it is a mushroom or not. I'm leaning more towards the Cthulu, which were mentioned previously.

Lace, I understand you're super smart and everything, I got the idea a long time ago, but I really don't consider someone who doesn't know every last bit of information on fungi, right down to their class/order/whatever, dumb. People have different topics of interest that they excel in, usually ones that they are interested. I don't really consider knowing that mushrooms are linked in an underground chain of whatever the crap to be common knowledge or any of that stuff. I don't think Pixel, or many people who make video games, do hardcore research about every element they add into the game and are experts at it, thus making it entirely accurate.

If gamers were presented with Jack saying "There are dangerous creatures in the graveyard. But they aren't mushrooms..because blahblahblah" it'd just be strange. It looks like a mushroom, it is intended to be a mushroom, and regardless of real life 'logic' or 'science', in the video game it is a mushroom.

I don't know why I'm even bothering to argue this because: It's a damn video game.

I had a similar argument with someone in Terraria when one of the updates made it so the left was the west, and the east was the right, when before the directions were determined by the setting of the sun just like in real life. But arguing it in the first place was stupid. Why? It's a damn video game.

Yes, yes, I get that.
The only reason you see me resorting to science or using it in ways where it is not meant to be used (video game logic etc) is because it is one of the only venues that hasn't been totally exhausted in this theory section. It is uninteresting to just answer a question with "Because". Obviously a lot of things weren't thought through beforehand. Why is there light in the caves? Pixel doesn't give a fuck, but it is still interesting for us to discuss, much more so than admitting to the truth. That's what the majority of this forum is, you see. Not necessarily with science/math in particular, but with other types of thought. Stuff become interesting when seen from a different viewpoint, or when synthesized in a different fashion: You may have things you associate with cave story, and get theories from that. X, for example, synthesized together his associations of Lovecraft with CS, and thus created an amazing theory.

tl;dr
"It's a damn video game" is a statement that has no place in Forum #69. We are all aware of that, yet accepting it means pretty much the death of the Theory section.

(PS: that classification wasn't for a mushroom, but rather a pignon. I spent time doing that because I am a nerd. It ended up in an extinct class of creatures, so perhaps that entire type got lifted into space with the island? :muscledoc:)

Edit: screw you cap

This is why we can't have nice things. It's dead and nobody wants Cave Story ruined with science.

Okay. Science is over now.

EDIT: Nevermind, I actually read those links and I don't use scientific examples in any of them except for where I brought up gravity, which is fairly evident in the game. My point still stands.
And I didn't even post in the "Lighter than Air" thread, so be more careful next time.

Only one of them was directed at you. The rest were countering your "dont rooin cs w/ science point" by showing that science has been brought up in many legitimate and notfrownedon theories.

It's the cave story tribute site. Obviously we need to expand to survive, but into what? who knows!?

According to google's autocomplete feature, we need to expand into a fourier series and then foreign markets, respectively.
