I've always headcanoned that the Island itself is floating above Japan, probably in one of the heavily forested regions of the country. (i know almost nothing about rural japan)
Now, it would be funny if the Island were Australian, but then that would mean the entire game would be upside down. That would make the game kinda hard to play.

At the very least, we can deduce that it isn't the Aokigahara forest in front of Mt Fuji. I mean, come ooooon, the volcano would've been in plain sight.

because it's [...] in real life
it's not
many elements of the in-game universe fundamentally differ from ours (e.g. the existence of magic). there is no reason to believe any of these countries as we know it exist in the game

Even if it's near Japan in real life, there's like, a few dozen countries that are closer than Australia.

there is no reason to believe any of these countries as we know it exist in the game
To be fair tho, whether this applies to Cave Story or not, in fantasy media there's always the region where it's very blatantly just Japan, and the Sakamotos, Itoh, the Hermit Gunsmith, and the Doctor all have Japanese names, but then there's Jenka with a Finnish name. ...Wouldn't this also mean Ballos and Misery are also Finnish? Perkele vittu saatana

Very fair point, you got me :pignon2:
So the research group can reasonably be inferred to have come from Japan. Now, in this universe, is Japan simply the closest major country to the Island so it's more likely to research it, or is Japan just a global leader of exploration and research so it took the initiative*, or is it simply one of many countries sending research groups that are exploring the Island (a la Antarctica)? I guess the simplest assumption to make is the first, so we can safely say the Island is close to Japan.
*Unlikely, considering Quote and Curly can be assumed to be the result of either the world leader in robotics, or an international collaboration. If this were the case the words on Quote's hat would probably be in Japanese, in which case Sue would more likely remark 'Hey that's my language!' rather than simply 'That's a language from the surface!'.
probably in one of the heavily forested regions of the country
Yeah good point, we know the island is floating above a heavily forested area with mountains around it. I don't think Australia has such geography.
and if it would be in japan it would get more human visitors
Because of Japan's high population density and the Island's proximity, you mean? I'm not so sure about that, the Island is implied to be quite dangerous and not exactly convenient to access. We do know it is being explored in a scientific capacity - again, something similar to Antarctica, or other remote/isolated islands around the world. These don't really see much tourist footfall.

I always imagined it to be a paranormal place, similar to the island in the TV series Lost (2004). A place that's always "mobile" and you can't really find it because it travels through time and space.

Oh man, that could've made a pretty cool plot twist at the end, the Sakamotos escape the island only to find out they're in another world entirely. That could actually make a good mod premise, too...

From what I know, Australia is mostly desert with little to know forest, if you look at the images of the island you see mountains AND trees along with vegetation on the island itself, there's also birds in some images and unless those birds are ducks and swans it's probably safe to say that there's no way the Island is in Australia. Another reason is there's no gigantic spiders on the Island, so that alone tells you it's not in Australia.

ok this is actually a pet peeve of mine, because while yes, the desert is the largest part of the country, we do in fact have lots of forest of varying thickness and dryness, including rainforest, alpine, tablelands, mountain ranges etc etc. it's a very varied climate, not just the red desert you see in media - for example, today it was 39C at its hottest in perth, western australia, but only 15C (+ arctic wind chill) in hobart, tasmania.

(also we have a huge variety of birds outside of ducks and swans?!?)

anyway, the REAL and ACCURATE proof and evidence that it might not be in australia... is that nobody ever calls someone a fuckin' wanker

Oh my bad, sorry.

But you said RAINFOREST, based on Pixel's tree designs we can notice that it's not close to anything in a jungle and that it's a regular forest.
