Assuming you've branched off from the manga picture and are talking about Cave Story in general?

as pixel has told us time and time again I think :D
It's up to the player!

Nevertheless nowhere in Cave Story does it say what is on Quote's hat, even all of the pictures in the credits with Quote just show the cap blank. What is known is that the cap has something written on it in a language that's not native to the island, although Sue recognized it.

The robots must use binary? If you accept that magic does exist and talking mushrooms restore memory, and life pots work on machines, then you should probably open your mind to the possibility that they could exist on an entirely different kind of technology than our realityyyy, therefore it's up to the players imagination...

If I recall, pixel was the one who said what was on quote's hat.

I believe F-Ram is working on a Cave Story manga, correct?

...even if it does have a few things in common with Duke Nukem Forever and Starcraft Ghost? :-P

@andwhyisit
Actually somebody who drew some fanart defined that it was "Curly Brace" that is written on the cap from what I remember.

@Gyro
He's making a comic. Also, more of it is known than ever DNF4 or Starcraft Ghost had.

I still think they need a World of Starcraft. Even though it's not nearly as catchy.

It did not originate in fanart, http://community.livejournal.com/doukutsu/76418.html
Someone did ask Pixel what was on the hat and got an answer.

Here it is if you are too lazy to follow the link:
First of all, I apologize for those that wanted to leave this to the imagination. I was too curious, so I went ahead and asked Pixel, using my terrible Japanese, what was on Quote's hat.

Quoteさんの帽子に、何がありますか?
Pixel 12/10-00:39
> AGF
「CURLY BRACE」と描いていました。

Rough Translation:
AGF 12/09-14:31
What's on Quote's hat?
Pixel 12/10-00:39
> AGF
"CURLY BRACE" was written on it.

i got someone here that Pixel said "CURLY BRACE" is what is commonly drawn. Which is implied that he is saying: "The common consensuses among people who draw Quote is that the hat says "CURLY BRACE"

Then again this guy I got here is very very likely busting my balls. But putting it in Japanese seems like a good idea

How do you write Curly Brace in Japanese?

Also, the next one correctly stated that it says "drawn", not "written

カーリーブレイス

Also, the translation is ambiguous. A better translation might be 「"Curly Brace" has been drawn」 which would imply that the "fans" were the deciding factor in his answer. Best not to worry about it, it's no big deal.

書く is "to write" and 描く is "to draw", which has the same reading(kaku) by the way.

They speak Japanese on the island, and the
words on the hat are written in a language
not from the island, therefore it must be in
English, also there is the matter that Pixel wrote
the words "CURLY BRACE" in English in his reply.

Yeah, if you're using the original version. So in the English patch, CURLY BRACE should be written in Japanese.

Well, no, I've seen a lot of English translations that simply make it so that English people can read the text, but act as if everyone were speaking Japanese (Japanese symbols on signs, Japanese culture, etc.), there's no reason that can't be the case here.

Besides, Curly Brace looks cooler on his hat than the Japanese equivalent - then he just looks like an anime fanboy. :p

...if she knew english (Which is presumable)

Is it? Sue starts to read the hat, but it's in another language. Who knows if she can read it or not?

Well, since she is from the surface, she would definitely have at least learnt to distinguish English from Greek.

I'm pretty sure this isn't our earth, so what language is widely used can be completely different. Maybe it's french on the cap :p

-e-
By the way, she probably meant the letters used, not the language, since names stay phonetically the same. As long nobody screws up the phonetics of latin letters, it's the same for every language.

Wait, not of this Earth? I thought it was just the future. With magic. And weird rabbit things. OK, maybe it isn't. :p

Remember this:

andwhyisit said:
I believe that the robots use english as their primary
language since a lot of programming languages use english
words e.g.
HTML ... style="background-image: blue;" ...
ActionScript ... this.gotoAndStop(16); ...
SQL ... SELECT firstName WHERE ...
So it would make sense that any errors/information
that is sent would be in english e.g.
**Error** Scene=Scene 2, layer=Action, frame=1:Line 143: ')' expected
an error message would be in ENGLISH not Japanese.
Explains why Quote's hat is in english.

So robot language = english
Everyone else = japanese

of course the robots will understand japanese as well...

That is why the hat is in english.
The people on the surface speak Japanese as well.
This is why Sue is speaking in Japanese.

Also, I think there are Elves and Dwarves on the surface as well as
humans, look at the first two to wear the Demon Crown.

p.s. Sorry for quoting myself.
