Well, I don't know if the Wii does achievements, and if it does Pixel probably won't be looking at this forum for ideas, but isn't it all the rage these days to have achievements in all the new games? So lets create a list of unofficial achievements for Cave Story. First, the givens:

Don't forget the sunscreen: Reach the Sand Zone
Escape Artist: Escape the Labrynth
Natural Climber: Beat the Outer Wall
Happiness: Defeat Misery
His Own Medicine: Defeat the Doctor
The Last Battle: Defeat the Final Boss
Remember Me: Restore Curly's memories
Unworthy: Enter the Sacred Grounds
Worthy: Complete Sacred Grounds
probably a few more in that vein, including some about finding the hidden weapons

And the equally obvious:
Evasive: Beat the game with less than 25 health
Nimble: Beat the game with less than 10 health
Untouchable: Beat the game with only 3 health
Godly: Beat Sacred Grounds with only 3 health
Minimal arsenal: Beat the game with only the Polar Star, Fireball and Blade
Minimal items: Beat the game with only the Polar Star, Fireball and Blade and 3 health (for simplicity we'll ignore the life pot and other minor items)

So now we can do the fun ones:
Not Afraid: Defeat Igor without jumping or being hit (aka shooting out his projectiles. A freebie, really).
Earthbound: Defeat Curly without jumping or being hit (this requires stunning her with missiles)
Plain Foolish: Defeat the Core without jumping or being hit (or alternately with the fireball and not being hit)
Vengeance: Defeat Misery with the Blade
Ill-suited: Defeat The Sisters with the Fireball
Somewhat Quick: Beat Sacred Grounds in under 8:00
Very Quick: Beat Sacred Grounds in under 6:00
Incredibly Quick: Beat Sacred Grounds in under 4:30
Look Ma, No Feet: Beat Monster X without touching the ground (most likely requires the machinegun since he starts so far behind you and starts caring when the boss music starts. Easier with the machinegun either way.)
Pacifism: Beat Grass Zone without attacking anything except bosses.
Mad Dash: Beat the revisited Egg Corridor without attacking.
Don't Look Down: Beat the Outer Wall without the jetpack or machinegun (would necessitate adding only a single stepping stone at the very beginning). Alternately, beat the Outer Wall with the mimiga mask and no machinegun.
Very Cute: Beat the Last Cave with the mimiga mask and no machinegun.
Skill Only: Beat the Final Boss with the Polar Star.
Gone Fishing: Beat Ironhead without being hit (already gives you a badge).
As Absurd As It Sounds: Beat the boss of Sacred Grounds with the Bubbler.

More?

Some of those are plain outrageous XD

I don't think I could get through the sacred grounds with only three hp. Nice achievements though, I like the "Vengeance" one, pretty clever.

Which Balrog? The last one? The first? And no, obviously I haven't completed all of those. As a side note, on further thought the monster X one would work better if you placed a single star block right at the trigger such that if you jumped on it you'd start the boss fight, so you wouldn't have to machinegun hover until he arrived and could technically beat it without the machinegun. Also, the fireball challenges need to be placed in consequetive order, so they read as such:

Ill-Suited: Defeat The Sisters with the Fireball
Poor Decision: Defeat Misery with the Fireball
Just Plain Foolish: Defeat the Core with the Fireball

And two more: Secret Finder: Obtain all items available in the regular (non-Sacred Grounds) game in one playthrough (bubbler, maxed super missiles, maxed health, the lipstick, curly's underwear, the fish and clay badges, iron bond and everything required to get to it, arms barrier, one of the chaba items and anything else I'm forgetting. Everything except the mimiga mask and the mushroom would have to be in your inventory at the time you beat the red demon to get this. Would have to ignore weapon trades) and Jack of Many Weapons: Defeat one boss using every weapon in the game (to ensure you find weapon trades).

edit: OOoh, brilliant idea for another one. Gator Bait: Lure every sandcroc in Sand Zone out of the ground (this only works if my memory's correct in that they'll never go back down unless you shoot them, even if they are moved offscreen).

Not possible, because you don't get the mimiga mask until after you've beaten the Outer Wall. I believe the Outer Wall is also unbeatable without a jetpack.

Also not possible, because you cannot get every weapon in the game on a single playthrough. The machine gun, snake, and spur are mutually exclusive – you can only get one of them.

Provided you don't leave the zone, yes. I don't think there are any sand crocs other than on the way to Omega, so the challenge would start when you shoot the star blocks leading into that area and end when you defeat Omega.

Unless there are sand crocs on the bottom half of the Sand Zone?

Well, the outer wall thing was assuming the game could recognize "start to end" as a win while having the mask. And yeah, I pointed out in that post that one missing block, which has vexed me to no end because it is literally the only place in the entire game, barring the alternate final cave and sacred grounds, that you can't do with the mimiga mask/with the jetpack off. And all it's missing is one stepping stone at the bottom where Kazuma is; if you added that one block, the whole area would be possible (you have to jump on top of the purple sandcrocs at one point to get past them, who conveniently happen to be slower than the green ones such that you have time to do so).

As for the weapon thing, I was assuming the acheivment thing would be able to keep track of that one between playthroughs, just like the "X enemies killed" ones (I assume acheivements like that hold between playthroughs). As a side note, I can only think of three bosses I can imagine completely beating with normal missiles: Omega (requires some luck), the Sisters (actually, I'd need to check, but I'm guessing you can) and Heavy Press (simply because you can have SO MANY missiles when fighting him, not to mention that he takes a lot of damage from each one since they sorta travel through him). And I find it ironic that the one of those three which would require going all the way through hell would be the easiest to use for the "beat someone with the game's second weakest weapon" challenge.

Come on, the idea here is to limit ourselves to challenges which are possible for a person with enough skill and patience/effort without use of cheats, hacked controllers or savestates. Better yet, challenges which we think more than five people on earth could complete under those conditions. A 3 HP run is hard but possible. Without saving is a joke. And I don't think even the turbo-controller wielding Japanese speed runners got under 2 minutes in hell.

ZarroTsu said:
Yeah, I like those, though they're not quite the normal family of acheivements they're a good checklist of challenges. I don't feel like testing all those times myself right now, but at a glance I think you gave Pooh Black a bit too much; he doesn't have very much health if you use the right weapons, and doesn't disappear for very long. Also, you seem to have left off Balrog 2 and Balrog 3 (I don't think Balrog 1 deserves to be on the list).

Of the five challenges at the bottom, Beastiary sounds exactly like an achievement should be, the last one sounds rather unfeasable (and unfun), and the other three sound like degenerative versions of the 3HP and no-saves runs.

Here's parts of the Cave Story achievement list that crossed my mind-

(I might be repeating some previously posted, since I haven't looked though the idea list, yet... Also, this list was originally made as an Xbox 360 achievement list, which explains the GamerScore #'s at the end of the descriptions, as well as the <Secret> tags, which don't reveal the description until you unlock the achievement)

6. Night vision (Retrieve Shinobu from the dark deserted house in the Sand Zone without using the Map System. 20)

12. Speed is of the essence (Get the missiles in Egg Observation Room? and escape before the Dragon Sisters arrive. 20)

18. The more the merrier (Get the redemption ending without returning Mr. Little to his house. <Secret> 100)

20. You can't hit me (Defeat the Core without picking up any Life Capsules in the game. <Secret> 100)

21. Still can't hit me (Defeat Undead Core without picking up any Life Capsules in the game. <Secret> 100)

24. uber 1337 discovery (Find the hidden 4th ending. 0)

For obtaining the nemesis, the title should be "Chosen of the Goddess" or something like that.
