Honestly they don't seem wretched to me, it's just the series doesn't really deserve the copious praise it gets from its many fans.

 

I've read them as well
honestly the entire thing was written sort of like fanfiction, but with proper grammar and spelling

especially in the regards that main character girl had a bunch of characters bending over backwards for her, and ended up getting like a whole bunch of powers randomly near the end

it didn't really deal with any subjects beyond unrequited love, though
also looking back the main character girl really doesn't get any characterization beyond being awkward, depressed (because high school is really hard amirite) and TOTALLY MAD IN LOVE
and yeah obviously all this romance stuff isn't exactly my cup of tea, so I really didn't enjoy it that much

I read Beautiful Creatures, which is another supernatural romance, and I must say that I was very impressed. It was a real page turner -- I read it in one sitting.

Very quality.

I did just talk about a book I liked, mister fabulous.

 

Try James Clavell's Shogun, Terry Pratchett's stuff, and H. G. Wells' The Time Machine.

Also, Flatland was horribly sexist, even for its time (I think?).

Yeah, I had to read a lot of those ones too. The ones I did actually enjoy were Death of a Salesman, The Great Gatsby, In Cold Blood, 1984, and..uhh, that's pretty much it I think. I enjoy books a lot more when I can read them on my own time and not have to nitpick every single detail. Screw you, English class.

This is very true, and oddly enough people do make livings by writing essays (literature in academia) about books that REALLY stretch the interpretations. By this point, they realize that it doesn't matter what the author meant: it matters what scholars think the author meant. Still a viable discipline though.

Animal Farm/1984
Harry Potter I guess

To this I will add Mortal Engines, the Children of the Red King books, So You Want to Be a Wizard (if I can ever find more of them >_>) or going more by author Eoin Colfer (Artemis Fowl etc.), Elizabeth Honey (outstanding tales for the young 'uns), Diana Wynne Jones (Howl's Moving Castle), Dr Karl, that type of thing. I've become more interested in politics over the last couple of years too.

What I'd like to and probably need to read: too much I haven't been reading as much as I used to, partly because video games and partly because uni has made me sick of using my brain. Recently I've been trying to read Exodus by Leon Uris but it's not quite my swag.

And Artemis Fowl, yeah I read all the books, but I don't know if they're among my favourites. But still, most of the people on this site are at the ideal age to read them (unfortunately, few of those people are posting on this thread).

 

Oh mang, I read the entire mortal engines quartet.
I really really liked it, but that was also a long time ago, so I'm not sure my recommendation still holds weight..
(I remember being initially disappointed by the third though)

As for Colfer, book three was perhaps the pinnacle. Have read so many times.


Edit: I remember so you want to be a wizard! there were like a thousand! it was difficult to deal with!
also diana wynne jones! dark lord of derkholm and the chronicles of chrestomanci were great!

I found the second and third books to be a kinda meh but I generally liked the last one. First is still the best though.

I still have the whole set.

 

I have two books on my bedside table: a dictionary and a Bible. My closet is overflowing with early-edition Biggles novels. (The British pilot.)

I'm not particularly fond of conflict-driven narrative, which kind of excludes every mainstream novel ever written.

I'm sitting about waiting for a modern vampire story that doesn't suck massive piles of arse.

 

So books

I'm just now reading Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and it's pretty interesting so far. I am a sucker for New World Order stories and this is a classic one. In Ford We Trust.

Something I got for christmas, on the lighter side, is Zombie Spaceship Wasteland which is a sort of autobiographical thing by Patton Oswalt, a comedian guy. It was an alright read, and it made me laugh. Granted that isn't a hard thing to do so take that with a grain of salt maybe.

 

Agatha Christie books and John Green books are both worthy investments.
Also I must say I love the epigraph in the Great Gatsby.

Alsoalso Skulduggery Pleasant is pretty much the best book ever written about a skeleton detective.
