  • I want to make some form of small Cave Story mod soon, but I also really do not want to open booster's lab lol!

    easy solution just use BEANS
For some unknown reason, instead of wanting to play new modern games, I really like the concept of going back and playing games on the dreamcast, n64, GBA, gamecube, the ds, wii, etc.

I've mostly been playing DS games recently on my DSi, and it's been a blast (growing up, I only really had 1 ds game, that being The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
Pokemon Colosseum was a weird game to me. It was kinda fun to play, but honestly, I was trying to beat it just to trade the gamecube pokemon with my gba pokemon emerald (awesome)
okay so just curious, what is everyones opinion on jenkas nightmare?

I played both versions, ZarroTsu and the revived version by Slither that is widely considered as "the best" ending of Jenka Nightmare

My main memory of the original version which was Jenka Nightmare Revived by Slither that was like, an ending to the original.
I don't remember half of it, I just know it happens after Quote got knocked out around the end of the game.
And it was like a stupid thing where after getting the booster 2.0, you went through rooms that had a similar level design, with spikes that grew larger in wideness as you went through doors, only to come at the end where you meet a Droll looking character that says he's one of those Omega or Alpha things I forgot, then you have a little boss fight, then Misery comes in and it's the end. I discovered later that this was not the good ending, it was like an alternate one but instead of going upward, I went somewhere else. It was a long way back to do the other ending so I ended it here.

I have the same opinion as ZarroTsu expressed in the boss rush room in his version, it was a bit underwhelming. The mod aged pretty poorly even if it was pretty advanced compared to some of it's time, it did get the soul of Cave Story and I believe it was fairly judged back then. Nowadays, it's pretty meh, a lot of quirk of the level design would be outrageous and or just suck. The story is good for a sequel, and it was pretty advanced and innovative. It's mainly it's legacy that is uphold, I wouldn't recommend it nowadays.

ZarroTsu fixed things, exaggerated others but, having played this version long looong ago, I can't really say much on it. I just remember having a good time.

(Edit:The beginning is slow af though and it doesn't pick up the pace until you hear about teleporters and destroy the two bosses, so a quarter of the game is slow and boring.)

I've always found it very interesting and a little bit frustrating that most users blend together JN and JNR as being the same mod. To clarify, there are 3 different versions of Jenka's Nightmare.

As explained in the bottom of that post, there was never officially any version of JN that came out that was called "Brotherhood". But to your question, Cibryll, I did indeed do some spritework for JNR. Dunc and I, along with a couple of other users, were a part of the crew that did some re-working for that mod in late 2012. Even after all that work, it was still pretty underwhelming, to be honest, but at least it wasn't quite as awful as the version that people were playing in late 2011. I did some playtesting and gave feedback, and also did the sprites for Genesis (not those facepics though) and Oblivion, I also did the grim reaper re-sprite, and a lot of cosmetic changes to the tilesets in the pre-existing rooms. A little bit ironic that Doors had me doing sprite work for him, considering that he would soon afterwards go on to become a far more skilled artist than myself.

^ Yeah, I vaguely remember there was a beta testing forum for JNBr since September '12… with "hover to show" spoilers.
All my life, I've attempted to try playing through "Pokemon FireRed", and never really got far. If I did get far, I would be using fast forward, and eventually even cheat. As a kid, this is what I did at least, and no wonder I didn't find the game very fun.

Now, I'm actually trying to play through the game. I'm playing it on a DSi via GbaRunner2, meaning that it's running on real hardware, and with 0 fast forward or cheating. It feels really good too, I'm actually having lots of fun playing through the game!!

Also I can transfer my save file to my phone and use an emulator there to trade pokemon between firered and leafgreen -- whether that be a second instance of leafgreen on my own phone, or trading with a friend that just so happens to also own the game on their phone (We've traded some pokemon, they're playing through leafgreen)

Rant over, just having lots of fun playing this :)

Is GBARunner2 actually good enough to use yet? I haven't ever really bothered with it

    yea
cave story modding nowadays is soo hard for me

i have so many new ideas (story-wise) for the big mod I've been wanting to make for a year now, but I just can't bring myself to even open boosters lab, or open visual studio to work on the code of the mod (CSE2)

    sucks!

I know the feel. There are always dry seasons for just about any project that requires more than a couple months of work.

    i can totally relate
i *started* two projects just to put them aside before actually doing much with them in the past month. i have asked on the forums for ideas but i really lacked motivation to make them into reality, aaand yeah. sometimes... it's just like that, i suppose

I'm kinda in a similar (metaphorical) ship, haha.

I mean. The only project I've actually finished was a badly-executed Cave Story mod.
All the hundreds of other projects are either unfinished or haven't even been started (or are just plain trapped within the eternal planning phase since they're way out of my abilities).

Though I'm able to get myself to open up CaveEditor, I don't really feel like doing much and end up just closing it and playing video games spending time on forums and doing research on stuff. Though, there'll probably be a time that I just wanna spend on modding instead of other things. It happens at times.

I don't think any Cave Story mod could handle a majority of my ideas though, haha. (Plus some of them might simply end up being a terrible idea. Like a Level 10 Crescent Moon. =p )

I really wouldn't want to see this journey end with a "I'm not going to be getting a CRT anymore." post. See what you can do and try to persevere.

Rip the dream but wait, maybe not!
I would probably die of nostalgic overload if I was to play my old games on a CRT. It's definitely a worthwhile investment and I hope there's no further issues to you acquiring it.

Technically CRTs (at 60fps) do have 8.3 ms delay at the center, and 16.6 ms delay at the bottom of the screen. It has to run in such a way that displaying from top to bottom, it syncs up to the frame rate and is ready to display the next frame as the first one is done rendering.

Also I have 23 CRTs. They are very cool!

the rendering line added a certain charm to those chunky screens =w=
