I finished the remake a while ago and it wasn't bad. Not particularly memorable, but didn't feel like a cheap cash grab. More of a tribute or at least inspired by Yume Nikki, rather than an actual remake.
You can tell there was a lot of work put into it, whereas I would think of a cash grab to be something like a mobile version of Yume Nikki where you can pay for new outfits and energy to walk around "new worlds", which have nothing to do with themes from the original. Maybe you would find advertisements in the new worlds.
And there's supposedly this from the store page:
This game was created under the direct supervision of and with full cooperation from the original creator, Kikiyama, in hopes of spreading the magic of Yume Nikki to new fans and further expanding the potential of both the RPG Maker series itself and indie games in general.
So, even if a mediocre reception, I would imagine the creator enjoyed seeing an alternate vision of his work come to life.
... My opinion on the original though; Yume Nikki was an odd game. A lot of random wandering was interesting, mapping the world a little bit at a time. But it also put me to sleep after a while...
Maybe that's the point? What kind of crazy dreams *did* I have after playing Yume Nikki and falling asleep in front of it?!
