It's "Curly Brace"
But some fans use "Quote" on it in fanart.

The writing on Quote's hat is inconsistent.

That's definitely what should be on there. "Inconsistent". Or better yet, "?".

It is officially "Curly Brace", but yes, there is a level of inconsistency.

Perhaps Quote has two caps, swapping them from time to time. I don't find equipping a wet cap so nice. And I think I'd like it less if I were a robot.

I know this topic is slightly old but I feel the urge to put in my thoughts.

I never thought his cap said Curly Brace on it. I know his name was originally going to be that, but I'm pretty sure his hat says Quote on it, or possibly some robot identification code?

The reason I don't think it says Curly Brace is A) Curly did not notice it when he first saw her in the Sand Zone. Then again, there is no proof Curly can read -- however I presume she can since Quote was able to read things Kazuma and Sue had written on the computers. Sue said the language on his cap was "not one they have on this island," so you can assume she recognized it -- and since Quote was made on the planet below the island, it's safe to assume the language on his cap was the language down there, the one Sue and Kazuma originally speak and write in -- which Quote could read. Ergo, one can assume Curly can read it as well.

B) Why would Quote's hat say Curly Brace, when one, that's not his name, and two, there is nothing that links Curly to Quote in the same fashion -- I suppose one could include the iron bond, but it seems there's only one of those.

And, uh, yup. Those are my thoughts. I know it's been officially confirmed by Pixel that the hat says Curly Brace, but I think it maybe makes more sense if it said Quote. I always just assumed it did when playing after I found out his name, anyhow.

I like the above idea that he is wearing Curly's hat for some reason. Maybe she gave it to him during their mission 10 years ago. Or maybe he found it. After all, she has a record of losing clothes (i.e. Curly's underwear).

Because Pixel said so. It was the only question that he hadn't left to "the player's imagination". It most likely has to do with how Quote was originally called Curly Brace until Pixel changed it sometime during the final year of development.

Why people don't accept this answer?

Yeah, what Schoko said. One, Pixel answered that question... um, somewhere, the link should be here somewhere, and two, official pictures even post-2004 include the writing.

I'm aware that it's officially stated that his hat says Curly Brace. But that leaves us with plotholes (why Curly didn't mention the writing, etc.). Also, it was set that it would say that on his hat when his name was intended to be Curly Brace -- in other words, the hate would say his name. Therefore I just think it's more reasonable since his name is officially Quote, his hat in turn would say Quote.

So yes, I do know in reality it says Curly Brace, I was just saying it would make more sense if it said Quote. I never said I didn't "accept" that, lol.

I'm inclined to believe that neither Curly's or Quote's names are on his hat. Pixel confirmed that it says "Curly Brace", what used to be Quote's name. But I think he did that because he wanted to preserve Quotes original design, or some other personal descision. I doubt he left "Curly Brace" on quote's hat because of any sense or plot significance. Or, perhaps it was a mystery that he intended to resolve but then later forgot to. You can't expect the plot to be perfect.

Quote's hat is written in English, everyone speaks Japanese in the game, including surface dwellers. Curly most likely can read Japanese. Doesn't mean that she can read English though.

Also I am guessing that in the English translation the hat would most likely be written in Japanese.

I figured this one out long ago.
On Pixel's BBS, he answered that written on the hat was 'CURLY BRACE'.
Now, once we make the switch to English, Sue doesn't recognise the language. So CURLY BRACE has gone back to Japanese, and therefore in English on his hat is written カーリーブレイス, the Japanese equivalent of Curly Brace.
Logic enough?

We went over that. In the Japanese version, Quote's hat says Curly-Brace. In the English version, it's not in English.

Romanized as, if I'm not mistaken, "Kvadratnaja skobka". Heck, it could even be "lomená závorka" (blech!).
