do you ever wonder what happened on the island before the events of cave story?

 

*The Gaudis started to eat Mimigas so Jenka has sealed them in the labyrinth.
*The Red Demon was also eating Mimigas so Arthur slayed it.

 

Here's most of what we've gleamed at so far:

Ballos was imprisoned on the island by Jenka and was later forced by Misery to make the demon crown. Of course this meant that Misery was cursed by the crown to obey the crown bearers, although I doubt that was her wish. While we know little of the first two crown bearers, the third, known as Miakid, set alot of the events in the game in motion.

Miakid was sent to the island to take the island with robot soldiers and retrieve the crown for the governments of the surface. Now I should note that before Miakid's appearance there were a number of Humans residing on the island, a large number of which died defending the Mimigas from the robot soldiers. One theory states that the Cthulthu are the remnants of those Humans. In order to get out of a losing battle a number of Mimigas ingested red flowers as a last ditch effort to fight off the robot soldiers, and won, but could never return to normal. Then Miakid then took the crown for himself and started using enraged Mimigas to wage war. Curly and Quote were sent to destroy the crown, but didn't make it in time and were subsequenty defeated by the empowered Miakid.

At some point robot soldier team 9 attacked the core, but it could have been either an accident while taking the island, or purposeful in the sense that they wanted to get rid of Miakid after he took the crown for himself.

Of course little was known about how Miakid was defeated.

Later on during the 10-year gap between the red flower war and the start of Cave Story Arthur defended Mimiga Village from the Red Demon.

Where did people find out about MiaKid?
I didn't find it in the game.

Alright, because this is in the theories section, I will post my theory of what happened. This is mostly fact and partly theory.

Part One: The Destruction
Ballos, the good orange-skinned wizard that he was, was helping the people of the kingdom he lived in. The jealous king had Ballos tortured because he was very, very jealous. Ballos went insane, making his magic run wild, making the kingdom ash in less than a night.

Part Two: The Creation
Ballos' sister Jenka locked him away in the Seal Chamber. Jenka has a daughter named Misery. Misery wants more power, so she has her uncle Ballos create the ODemon CrownO. Misery ends up cursed by the ODemon CrownO's power.

Part Three: The Unknown
Reigns of Annachponae and Halda. Nothing is currently known about this period of time.

Part Four: The War
Humans on the surface learn of the ODemon CrownO. They send up armies of Killer Robots being led by Miakid. Quote and Curly are sent up to the island to destroy the ODemon CrownO. Miakid secures the ODemon CrownO. Quote and Curly attempt to kill Miakid, iinstead being knocked out and given amnesia due to Miakid's insane powers. However, Arthur, hero of the mimigas, Kills Miakid as he sits laughing on his throne, then pulls his Blade out of Miakid's skull and returns to the Mimiga Village.

Part Four: The Known
A research team consisting of the Sakamotos, Fuyuhiko Date, Itoh, Professor Booster, and possibly others goes up to the island. Date finds the ODemon CrownO, what he came to the island for, and awakens Balrog and Misery. Date has Misery turn Sue Sakamoto and Itoh into mimigas. Professor Booster and Kazuma Sakamoto are thrown in jail. Date throws Momorin Sakamoto off the island personally, but she survives. Kazuma manages to escape his cell, finding himself somewhere known as Grasstown, and tries to establish a chatroom connection with his sister Sue...
