Is there a way to disable the music in Cave Story, and if not, why not? I prefer to play games with SFX, and no music.

Hey everyone happy Christmas Eve we're aware of what's happened with the source code so to keep this simple absolutely don't post it on the site or use it to make mods with (it's not particularly preferable toward this end anyway) and tread lightly in general until we see how this settles, thanks to all and have a great holiday season -DT

tl;dr there are a number of ways one could go at it but none of them are perfect. The method Gardebiter suggests on the first page leaves in the drum instruments on the soundtrack. The only way to do it properly is with a hack.

In the Wii version it's just a matter of going into game options and turning it down, the official PC version on the other hand i'm not so sure about.. You probably could via hex editing if you knew what you were doing, unfortunately I doubt i'd be of much help. This should be a relatively easy hack (change the music function to always think its argument is 0), but I have not my hacking materials (eg, doukutsu -- everything else is on dropbox) at school.
If you haven't already played through with the background music though, I highly recommend that you do. There are some high quality songs, brother.
0x420ee0 is the music player -- just go to that address and xor [arg.1],[arg.1] at the beginning.
(yes I know that's not a parseable line but cosh)
edit: or just replacethe 55 at 420ee0 w/ c3, so it rets early.
edity: I see that's what cookie suggested in the other thread. mrf!

The original Cave Story requires you to use some hex editing, as Lace and Noxid already stated.
As for Cave Story+ and the Wii version, you can just simply go into the options and turn down the volume to nothing.
