Okay, I would do anything to play this on my dreamcast. I have it for the computer, but the Dreamcast is my favorite system of all time. There are so many homebrew games for it that it's ridiculous, lots of old pc games (rise of the triad, doom, duke nukem 3d), arcade games, etc.

what would totally make my day -- make my life -- is for this game to be ported to the dreamcast. freeware of course, like the original pc game. i can't imagine it being difficult to do. it would probably take a few hours really, if you knew what you were going.

if anyone's interested in this, i am sure the hardcore dreamcast users out there (check out dcisozone.com for a HUGE scene) would fall in love with you.

Don't know if pixel's given the ok for more ports yet, he asked them to stop when he started working on Cave Stowii

What? Going around in a hot air balloon around the world wouldn't be difficult to do, it'd take a few hours really.

What's a dreamcast?

(not going to happen by the way. The reason contains the letters 'n', 'a', 'i', and strikes fear into the hearts of the innocent)

Huh?

Not only would you have to get Pixel's OK and also ask for the source code (which you are not allowed to give to the public, by the way), but the actual porting itself isn't magic. It's gonna take a lot longer than just a few hours, provided that you even get permission to do it.

I feel so sorry for you. It's the best fucking console ever created. The last console Sega ever provided, and didn't last very long because of the Playstation 2. It was the first console to ever play online games on, how would you not know this?!
I actually ordered one on Amazon, I got all the controllers, VMUs, games and everything, but the console ended up being broken. I'm getting the console for Christmas. It was fucking released in America at 09-09-1999. That tells you right there that it's fucking badass.

Anyways, the port of Cavestory to the almighty Dreamcast isn't going to happen. Pixel's anus will bleed incredibly bad if someone does it without his permission. But not only Pixel's anus will bleed, but also Nicialis' as well. They will seriously hunt you down and kill you if anyone does it.

It still failed on the market though. Largely due to Sega's stupidity, and a bit of bad luck.

This video gives some good insight into it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foARPDyZrXk&feature=fvw

It did fail, but not because the console was bad, but yes it was Sega's fault (as you said in your post) for the reason why it was canceled. However one of the biggest and stupidest reasons why the Dreamcast got discontinued was because of the Playstation 2 being the cheapest DVD player for its time, (I think?) so people were orgasming to the fact that it could play DVD's and went ahead and got themselves a PS2. I guess I did kind of emphasize on how great it was, but It's still an amazing console, possibly being the 2nd favorite on my list. I can't wait to get a Dreamcast again on Christmas, I still think my dad is an idiot throwing out all of our old consoles, luckily he gave me his Nintendo 64. I would have killed him if he threw that out too.

I still have all my old consoles (except my original playstation, but I don't really need it since my PS2 can play all my old PS games). I even have my old sega genesis and my old super nintendo (which work about half the time, what with the buttons on the controller being kind of hard to use, and the iffy power cord on the sega genesis). They still are fun to play though.

The nice thing about reverse compatibility with certain consoles like the PS2 and the wii is that you don't have to worry about the old console breaking then since the new one will play the old games on it.

I rented a dreamcast back way when for sonic adventure, and it was pretty fun. But we never bought one for some reason (guess a N64 and then a PS2 was enough at the time).

Oh, yes. Let's port a Freeware game to a old console that is not only obsolete by today's standards but is no longer on the market to buy (as in, not in stores. You could probably find a working unit on the internet somewhere). I can't see how this could be financially crippling or anything.

I remember having a Dreamcast. Actually, I don't remember it that well, but what I do remember, I loved playing Soul Calibur. Anyway, I thought it would be kind of strange to think about Cave Story on it.

(I'm pretty sure OP was trolling.)

But it does make me wonder about dreamcast homebrew.

THIS

Who wants to make anything like a game by yourself for 5 years and release it for free, you'd make no money.
