I agree to both andwhyisit's and DT's definition.
And I don't think that any definitions have to be in the rules.

Flaming - Attacking another user for no real reason, often involves TEXT YELLING and lots of mean words. Does not always have to be digging for attention, I mean somebody could just be an officious jerk who enjoys yelling at people <_< Think about the word, flaming = staring up flames/fanning the fires of a raging argument, makes sense yes?

Flaming is usually attacking a user FOR a reason, trolling is attacking a user for no reason. (Or just to look "better" to other people)

And before anybody argues with me on these definitions I would please ask that you don't, because
a) These definitions are pretty much textbook,
b) I have seen probably thousands of cases of each of these, which all pretty much match my descriptions, and having one or two people tell me I'm wrong won't do much to change my 'opinion lol', and
c) I am obscenely grumpy at the moment and will probably say something mean :D

lol, so it's based on your opinion again, since you get it from your experience.

As from my experience as well. I go to a lot of forums and am very active.

14 spam threads in the Mods forum in 12 hours? That's just ridiculous...!

Some spam bot must have this forum pegged. Least it's easy to avoid clicking on them, since almost every thread in the mods forum that's not spam is a "hot topic" and thus has a Curly icon rather than Sue.

I was gonna post about this earlier, but my post got mucked up somehow and I didn't feel like re-typing the whole thing out >_>
Would it be worth getting one of those spam-preventer thingies and installing it on the forums? I think it would prevent a lot of work in the long run. It might even be needed only in the Mods forum, the way things are going currently.

What we need is to add captcha verification to the registration page and delete all of the spambot accounts. Though we would need SkyeWelse for both. I just sent him an email about it.

But not all non-hot topics will be spam topics. Suppose a new mod pops up?

Well, I said easier. You're not gonna accidentally click it, but you still have to read the title to know if it's spam. I did say almost after all.

Ya know, I just looked through this entire thread, and I'd hate to be a thread zombifier or something, but couldn't we solve the colored text problem by adding a switch to the user CP that changes all text colors to one default color? So if somebody gets tired of having to highlight everything he reads, he can make it so that all the text comes out black. Rather than enforcing rules about how people can talk. It's the internet, free speech rules.

That would involve editing the stylesheet and the template, I believe. Which basically means that Skywelse is probably the only one who can do it.

Sorry but that makes it annoying for people that only colour a few words out of a post for emphasis and makes coloured posts pointless since only a few people would have the filter turned off. I would also like to point out that fully colouring a post has nothing to do with free speech. I could write this in coloured text or in default colour text, it still doesn't matter because it says the same thing either way with the only difference being that the coloured text would annoy anyone with a different skin to me.

He would have to be fairly good at PHP too.

Oh my – the whole first page of the Mods forum is flooded with spam...

At least I'm pretty sure it's spam.

Seriously?

No.

DoubleThink, I don't really like that idea.

It's kinda fun to do it, IMO.
