I put together this small video the other day, and thought it might be worth sharing here too; for anyone who uses any games, RPGmaker or not, that still use MIDI that doesn't have a built-in emulation :
CoolSoft released a program called VirtualMIDISynth, that allows any new Windows computer (Yes, even 8) to use soundfonts instead of the default Microsoft Synth. Before now, you'd need a soundcard like an Audigy 2 to switch soundfonts... Now anyone can do it!
RPGmaker just doesn't feel the same to me without it!
I made this video because I hadn't seen it mentioned in the RPGmaker community...
You can get the program here :

As for the soundfonts :
A bunch are linked on that page.
Here are some more :

The Musical Box 2.1 soundfont is currently down, replaced by the newer version called Evanessence... It doesn't always sound as good for RPGmaker midis, but if you want it, see if the creator will give permission to reupload it for our purposes. Or beg me to ask @_@ ...
Some soundfonts may be compressed in Sfark or Sfpack formats...
A quick google should find those small programs.
I have only had ONE issue that I will mention while using this : While I'm 99% sure it is unrelated, when using RPGmaker in fullscreen, sometimes all the instruments are piano. It works fine windowed, so I am able to work around it. I do not believe it is this program that causes this issue, because it didn't go away when I uninstalled. I just got this Windows 7 system recently, so I haven't been able to pinpoint the issue.
