Pixel and Cats

I'm going to start off by saying that Pixel probably likes cats.
Something that I've wondered about for a while now is that, Cave Story, despite being a huge game that Pixel worked on for years, is nearly cat-free. Off the top of my head, I can only think of Monster X (who only appears on the screen for maybe half a second as a cat) and that little Debug Kitty sprite that's hardly used. He developed a whole race of sentient creatures that don't really look like cats (They look a bit more like them in the Wiiware version, but that's not the point).
I can only wonder as to why he made the decision not to include them, as I'm pretty sure he didn't just forget.

 

Perhaps he felt it would be nice to take a break from cat-games, in my opinion, a Pixel game with cats as an important mechanic just feels a little gimmicky (shi-ne shi-ne galaxy, JiLJiL, etc.).

Also there might have been plenty of cats in the beta, although we have already seen that there were mimigas as we know them in the previous version.

 

He does seem to have a thing with dogs in CS. Perhaps the dogs are sort of in lieu of cats?

 

Jenka was probably going to be a crzy cat lady, but then one of his beta testers was all "Dude-san, make them dogs." So he did.

his biggest project by far, and the only cat in the final game is a bad guy--who you hardly see for long as a cat anyway. yet there are plenty of good dogs

 

The night spirits in the outer wall look like cats when they do their attack sequence. They've even got paws, pointy ears, and the correct-looking kind of mouth.

Actually I usually consider any more than two cats to be too many, so I guess. Still, from Pixel, I would have expected a more prominent position in the casting.

Pixel also seems to like frogs.
in cave story alone we have:
Puchis, the tiny frogs, BalFrog, Dr. Gero, and the nurse (I want to say Nurse izumi?).

Then there is soaprun, and he seems to unify his favorites in Ame Manga, starring a cat and a frog.

Idk, maybe he's just crazy.

The soaprun characters look more like Dr. Gero than balrog.
With the eyes above the body instead of in the middle.

 

How about Balrog has the eyes in the middle instead of above the body? I think that Gero and Balrog have roots in the same basic design, but Gero ended up looking more like a frog. It's hard to tell with the Soaprun guy, since he's like 8 x 8 pixels.

You can love anything without it being disgusting. Like pixel can love almonds, and that would be perfectly fine since almonds are delicious.

The question is at what point would his love for almonds turn into a fetish.
