Metroidvania. They are called Metroidvanias.
You would use it in a sentence like: "Momodora is a pretty good Metroidvania game."

 

cave story isn't even metroidvania really
it's too linear to be one

This is a pretty cool-child looking game. I may give it a look in the future.

 

Looks more like the Underside to me than Cave Story, I don't know why.

The Underside used pxtone as well.

 

I would also say it looks more like the underside, but that's probably because the art styles (the tile-sets in particular) are quite similar. Though I did notice that the enemies seem to have that little motif of giant eyes, kinda like in Guxt.

This looks interesting, so I'll give it a go.

I wasn't too impressed with the original, since it seemed to lack story... but, maybe I should give it a real chance...

 

Just posting to say that I played this and the sequel, and the sequel is indeed quite a bit better. The original is fun too. The sequel has a pretty cool soundtrack as well. It's too bad these were both pretty short though (and were lacking in the story department).

None of the Momodora games are in 2.5D. If you were thinking 2.5D, CS3D would be more along those lines, but this? No.

I'm just saying more pixels per sprite than cave story. Not really 2.5d. Closer in graphics to CS+.
