I always thought that curly is dead and when you reach her in hell you are like...trying to steal her spirit or something which makes the cherubs try to kill you.

I think it has to do with the fact that the island is crumbling and curly was in the bed in the plantation which is close to the statue chamber which is part of hell. So maybe the entire top part of the island between the last cave and the balcony sort of sinks down and curly sort of wanders towards the general area of the statue chamber and ends up in hell where the ground suddenly causes some walls to close in, rendering curly unconcious and stuck in hell. The door to the plantation from where the heavy press lands is locked when it falls which makes sense cause the door could just be sealed up by rocks.

Oh, you're thinking of Orpheus and Eurydice. Well, the problem is that 1) Curly is lying near the entrance and 2) Sacred Grounds are not Hell, they're just nicknamed Hell.
