Determining Mimiga gender, and the consequences thereof

I feel so stupid now, but when I read the Cave Story Manual, I thought the picture of Curly was supposed to represent Quote, which in turn made me think that Quote was female. So you are not alone in gender issues

When I first downloaded Cave Story, I had no idea the guy you're supposed to be was a robot, and when Curly was in the Manual I "wtf"d and went "So this is going to be a game about a badass girl who saves the world caves?"

Then I play, and then say "o i c wut u did thar :3".

Wow guys I never had any trouble with genders in Cave Story. Though Chaco does look like....

 

Exactly my point! When Mahin said Sue was the only female left, I believed him! Damn Mimiga just wants to have all the action to him/herself.

 

I didn't have any gender confusion per se, but the first time i looked at Jack's facepic i snickered and went 'Lol, he looks like a girl.' this combines with an entire freaking night of catching up on the Bleach seireis led to me imagining his lines being spoken by Rukia's english actor. weirdly, I always imagined Misery with the same voice.
Weird.

One that conveniently pushes my secret "Jack is a girl" agenda.

anyway, it looks like on the plain-and-simple when comparing the sprites male Mimiga tend to have thick eyebrows, and/or whiskers, and that's really the only obvious way to tell them apart from girls. Of course, the exception is Kanpachi, who, and hopefully I don't incur the wrath of the "kanpachi is the manliest man in manville" crowd with this, is just an adorable little laid back kind of guy, not the big ruff N tuff "let's grow out our eyebrows as if they were our equivalent to a beard" kind of mimiga. And the shovel brigade and prisoners are the same. But I think they're mostly just young people, like, at least younger than any other named Mimiga other than Toroko, Sue and Chie, and are as such quite ambiguous.

In fact, the prisoners at the King's Table, that blush upon Chaco's mentioning of Arthur's name, may very well be all female due to that fact. I always imagined them as being all male since they all have that "basic" look that reminds one of Kanpachi but in all likelihood Pixel intended them to be a mix of male and female since he seems to have put a lot of thought into this little race he made up and I don't think he'd want to admit that Chaco and Chie are the only females left out of the ENTIRE species by the end of Cave Story, but didn't feel inclined or motivated enough to make two separate "general Mimiga" sprites.

 

Well he kind of did have two seperate general sprites, the green worker ones and the brown prisoner ones..

Also, Kanpachi simply knows he doesn't need beardbrows or stachkers to prove how tough he is.

 

I say they're females because it seems that females are targeted by the doctor.
